Hi!
I’m having trouble finding information on the best procedure for unwrapping and creating the textures for a heritage project I’ve been experimenting with.
I had the opportunity to capture an old workshop and building using drone and camera images, first time I’ve attempted it so went a bit overboard in the image collection and didn’t use all the best practices but I’ve learnt a lot and finally aligned all the bits, inside and out.
As I’ve never reconstructed anything this large before I’m struggling to understand the best process for unwrapping and texturing a large polygon count asset. I’m looking for advice on how to proceed.
I believe the mesh will be around 5-8bn after initial generation. Currently doing this now, so I’ll post up pictures when it’s done.
Any advice greatly appreciated for a novice!
The mesh came in at 1.3B tris, so not as big as I was expecting, thank goodness!
Hi JHutsbyLVS,
basically it shouldn’t depend on the size of the model. In case of a big model you need to set just more textures (but it depends which settings are you using).
Hi Ondrej,
Thanks for your reply!
Yes, I understand that, I’m just glad it wasn’t as big as I expected as it would be more difficult to handle on my system
I’ve just been trying to get the best texture settings for use in Sketchfab under my pro account. I realise that the upload to Sketchfab is limiting due to Pro having a 200mb upload limit, which reduces the resolution and quantity of textures.
I was wondering if there was an efficient way to approach the texturing when simplifying the model and texture count to get the best result.
It currently looks like this:
Not sure if I can realistically get the texture to look any better… but I’m not massively experienced in all of this… plodding away and learning as I can!
Hi,
as you wrote, the model for Sketchfab has to be simplified to use the account’s limits.
You can try to use these texture settings for better textures:

Also, if you have simplified model, you can use the texture from original model by using Texture reprojection tool.
I’ll give it a bash! Thank you!
