Best hardware for 4k development

Looking for desktop PC hardware recommendations.

I’m planning to use UE5 for creating 4k images from 3d photorealistic scenes. They will either be still objects or a frame of an animation/live scene that I want to export at 4k resolution.

Budget is not an issue for this (within reason), so I am after a no compromises setup.

I have a strong programming, artistic, and engineering background, but am new to game engines in general and UE5 in particular. Also I have been working on Mac for the last 20+ years, so I’m not up to speed on PC hardware.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated - thanks.

Here is something to measure against. My specs:

  • Monitor 1: VG248QE, 1920x1080, 144Hz
  • Monitor 2: MX279H, 1920x1080, 60Hz
  • GPU: GeForce GTX 1080
  • CPU: Intel Core i9 9900K 3.6 GHz 16MB
  • RAM: 2x Corsair 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 3200Mhz CL16 Vengeance
  • Motherboard: ASUS ROG STRIX Z390-F GAMING
  • Cooler: Corsair Hydro H150i PRO RGB 360mm
  • Storage: Samsung 970 EVO Plus 500GB
  • Storage: Samsung 970 EVO Plus 1TB
  • Storage: WD Green 2TB IntelliPower 64MB
  • Case: Corsair Obsidian 750D Airflow Edition Black
  • Mouse: Logitech G502 Hero Gaming Mouse
  • Keyboard: Logitech G710+ Mechanical Gaming Keyboard

I am running the Lyra project on 35-50 FPS with the high settings. It is not super great…

I would suggest that you look for something like this to work efficiently:

  • Intel Core i9 13900K 3.0 GHz 68MB (I prefer Intel as it’s never let me down, however I think the smartest thing is to go with something from AMD) ← Get external cooling.
  • ASUS GeForce RTX 4090 24GB ROG Strix Gaming (Cheaper alternative: ASUS GeForce RTX 3080 Ti TUF - 12GB GDDR6X RAM)
  • ASUS TUF Gaming Z690-Plus D4 ← Is on the cheaper side, but works.
  • 64 / 128 GB RAM
  • Any M.2 Drive with read and write over 2500 MB/s
  • Any PSU with 1200+ W

Thanks so much for that detail. I have been finding out more about all the components, and it certainly looks as if this should cover my needs.

I’ll probably get a couple of 4k 144Hz+ monitors to go with the setup.
