I’m looking at getting back into music mixing, production, and creation. What have peoples experiences been with a DAW that works well with UE4? I’m likely to focus on game music specifically with some EDM/Hip-Hop on the side.
Thanks in advance

Depends. I’ve heard that a lot of game devs use Reaper because it’s quite extensable with plugins and scripts. I am personally using Cubase, and I’m content of it. Anyway- any DAW should do the job. Once Unreal Engine 4.16 releases, I think that you could do the beats right inside the engine, since the new audio system will allow you to link nodes and create synths. You could check out how the people building Star Citizen made a dynamic music system. You could use their ideas to create dynamic music in UE4.

I’m a bit of an FL Studio fan, it’s an incredible piece of software tbh. You’ll hear people say it’s a toy and the audio quality doesn’t compare to others but I’ve been in the audio business professionally for 10+ years and can promise you it’s the best I’ve used and believe me I’ve used them all.
The reason I like it so much is because it’s really modular and includes some incredible plugins including Flowstone which is a visual scripting tool not too different from UE4’s blueprints which allows you to create your own signal gen’s and processors (or even control robots) right inside the DAW.
I think I’ll wait for 4.16 to fully immerse myself in the sound side of the engine then. Cubase looks interesting and from what I’m seeing they’ve come quite a long way since I used them forever ago. They all seem equally capable just depends on your workflow. Thanks for the input. Any links for the ideology behind specifically game music composition anyone would recommend?
Reaper is what i use, it’s nice, lightweight, doesn’t come with a lot of bloat and is customizable.
Just pulled the trigger on Bitwig (got a great local deal).
Fl Studio offers excellent value.
Neither are patterned after ‘traditional’ DAW workflows - more orientated to working with midi.
Reaper also offers excellent value but is more of a traditional style DAW and favors working with audio.
