Naturally i’m new. Trying very hard to just learn about how to make games before i do anything for me.
I want to get a handle on the whole process. Starting from scratch in each aspect so i don’t miss anything/work out what i like best.
Its easy to find tutorials on single topics, yah for utube, (Say at creating a shooting gun, or an inventory, or material nodes), and individual topics are my next learning stage.
But i need to be able to see the “Whole picture” i need to know how things fit together before i start learning individual topics. I’m an outline and flesh in the details girl.
I’m looking for some fairly lengthy tutorials on using blueprints to design a whole game (Preferable NOT a shooter game) I’m more into simulation and non fighting RPG games. something that looks at the whole process… a whole (probably simple game) a bit like in the tutorial i mention below for C++.
I’m currently trying to dedicate 4 hours a day to tutorials in an effort to get a fairly basic (but broad) handle on game development. Then at least if i never use that particular thing again, i know where it fits in the process.
Currently i am doing Ben Tristem and Sam Pattuzzi’s: Udemy Tutorials Thanks to the advice in another forum. (Also some great ones for individual topics later, thanks guys)
“Unreal Engine Developer Course” to learn the idea behind C++
“Learn 3D Moddling The Complete Blender Course”
thanks folks.
EDITING TO ADD THE SUGGESTIONS YOU MADE IN ONE LIST
i know you said preferably not a shooter game, but just in case you haven’t seen this before, i highly recommend this tutorial, a lot of the content can be modified for any type of game.
Hey Sedgecumbe. The most useful tutorial I’ve come across in relation to the big picture is the Epic Twin Stick shooter one. On YouTube there’s a horror survival series by Virtus Learning Hub - I’ve not watched the whole thing but it seems pretty comprehensive. Google either of those and they should be easy to find. I’ve not come across much that doesn’t have shooting of some sort I’m afraid, but that may be because I’ve not specifically looked.
many thanks for your support. Yes i want to learn the procedures… so i can then translate, i feel this is the best way rather than trying to to muddle through as best i can and missing the bigger picture. Do a focused learning time first so i know WHAT i need to learn.
Creativity is my biggest “no problem area” i have the ideas, i can see the graphics, gameplay, challenges, menus, all in my head. I can see the interconnections, i can see what will affect what, i need the skills to produce it. Eventually this will probably need other people, but i’d like to get it to a “mock up” phase first. I can see spider maps of where variables will need to plug in. NO IDEA where the sockets are though… lol. Hoping that blueprints will match this style well. fingers crossed
The game play style is the player is a person who finds themselves in charge of a group of people who need to create a city and support themselves. (The setting and the gameplay interactions, are going to be amazing and i know i would play the game for weeks on end i’m sure.) The closest games i can think of would be “The guild 1400” which had many elements that i like, but not really quite what i want. Throw in some minor city building and resource creation aspects and there you go. Sounds boring but it is NOT your typical resource building game, nor a typical city building game. It will be much more small scale. Poplulation cap 100 ish… (I think)
Basically about helping your family survive the challenges and you providing support to people .
Possibly doing shooter tutorials will help because i wont be doing anything like it!! lol. I might give some ideas i had not thought of. I’ll look at them like that. Although would LOVE some tutorials on resource management…
sorry because I’m not creating value to the thread. I’m just wanted to say thank you, the links you shared here seems to be really valuable. I started years ago making little things with Game Maker, then I jumped to Unity, but the last year I’ve been concentrated in 3D creation. Now that I think I have a base I decided to jump to UE4, learn it from scratch. It do take a lot of time and effort to learn by oneself and get all the skills needed to create a game, that’s why I like the idea of the complete tutorial series. I hope more links pop up the next days and, I’m also wondering if someone knows some good payment tutorials of this style.
