I’ve done some mapping back in the days of doom and quake. So I finally in my life got some time to want to do something else with some extra time. want to get back and even learn more, but its like there are no good starter tutorials out there. Ever body wants to charge $24.99 to tell you to click here and click there. Just want the basics. like why can’t I just pick a material and have it in your hand so to speak and stretch, move or manipulate it as I see fit. maybe I’ve jumped ahead of myself and this is possible? But its no one wants to give up this info.
I have this Quick Start Guide for beginners, but it might be too basic for what you’re looking for. For example, it describes briefly what Materials are, but doesn’t go into detail about them.
It sounds like your mapping experience is slightly prior to mine but the doom/quake engine basically the same as the original call of duty one which used qeradiant. I’m assuming that’s the type of tool you want that produces brushes to build your geometry then apply the texture.
Bright side is there’s a tool that’s in development called probuilder for unreal that does just that, it’s just got its first release which is alpha/beta but if you check out there version for unity it’s essentially qeradiant only key difference besides being more modern is it doesn’t generate brushes it makes things into meshes which is better for modern engines.
If they follow the same structure as on unity there will be a free and premium version.
