Hey guys!
So, like many others, I was laid off from my environment artist job a couple months ago. But, honestly, it’s been a bit of a blessing in disguise to have all this time to work on art for what I got into it for in the first place: enjoyment.
So I spent a month or so working on this stylised take on Takeshita Street, in Tokyo. I didn’t really have a plan for this other than to make something cozy, and lean into the autumnal Ginkgo tree vibes and colours. I wanted to go a bit lo-fi so incorporated some near future elements/story telling in there too.
I really enjoy doing the entire environment art pipeline, and making things by myself to create art that’s truly unique. So I’m responsible for pretty much everything here from the ground up. Feel free to check out the breakdowns on ArtStation: ArtStation - Autumn in Tokyo
There’s also some videos with the scene in motion on there, that I think add a lot!
So there was a lot of hand sculpting/modelling/baking tiling textures and trims, hand crafting assets, both hard surface and the foliage which I used SpeedTree for. I made hand painted branch/leaf atlases for those. A lot of the graffiti/stickers are directly extracted/based on the real location in Takeshita Street for that added layer of authenticity.
I also learned a lot about shaders/material creation for this one. Using Claude to help create bespoke shaders tailored to me needs for the wind system, the parallax window set up, and the distant panning cloud reflections on the skyscraper.
Hope you like it!
