Autodesk killing existing perpetual licenses

If you own a perpetual autodesk license, prepare for a fight.

and here is the thing

So now our perpetual/eternal license is limited to the life cycle of your PC just because?.. Things cant get more pathetic.
Someone on the forums found this Directive of the European Parliament. Read point 13 which basically say, crack the software if the seller doesn’t honor the contract(14 and 15 are a good read too)

Here you can join the scandal

I began using Maya in 2001 ~ 2004.
Licenses were never mine, it was always owned by the company. I don’t work with 3D anymore, so to me this isn’t a direct confrontation, but I can imagine the situation for freelance modelers owning their own licenses. Blender need a plugin to behave in Maya-like shortcuts and UI, whoever build this plugin gonna get rich.

3D modeling isn’t my specialty, but this is why I have been investing and will continue investing in learning Blender for my projects

Meh, I was always a blender man, even if I got Maya for freer I would still stick with blender.

Maybe this is why Epic and Ubisoft just gave Blender loads of money. Autodesk must be really peeing themselves!

Just wanted to add a small update for the people that own perpetual licenses(should be more than 2million) the legal battle thread has moved here

And autodesk has clearly lost their mind and decided not to speak to the customers  People talk about cracking their legally purchased software and even about mass lawsuits if the company doesn’t provide a legal solution to the problem they created and left.Good job autodesk, good job…

A personal recommendation for the new artists.Dont even try to invest in learning autodesk software as its a money pit for the lone indie, small teams.

My decision to use Blender from the start I decided to do 3D was right even before this happening…

This will not turn OK for AD and I am sure of it. Piracy will happen even more and their revenue will fall at best, at worst people will shift to Blender.

You can remove max and maya altogether and autodesk wont feel the pain, you can shout blender all you want and they wont give a ■■■■ either.

so long as they dominate the cad world they wont budge on anything.

Here’s the real bummer though, even if tomorrow you come up with an open source, superior free easiest to use cad tools to compete with autocad and the likes, the autodesk zombified loyal followers of engineering firms and architecture mega corps wont switch their tools for anything else, the amount of money they pay to autodesk for them is a drop in a bucket. Also take note these guys are the real whales for autodesk not the freelancers or small studios.

Add to that these guys are unlike studios like ubisoft or epic who know their tech and can adapt change to minimize cost support blender build inhouse tools etc… No no. These guys are the type were autodesk sends their fashion model presenters to, in order to present a new useless update they need to subscribe to and those firms wont blink an eye so long as the PowerPoint presentation looked as good as the presenter and took place in a billion dollar office space.

these are the true aristocracies of the industry, the creme of the creme the very top one percent, in fact they love working with autodesk just because they speak the same language and they will happilly pay every penny for it and more.

I understand your points and sort of agree engineering firms are the ones which forms the most of their customers, but still… being myself user of Maya and Max, it is a pain when a software of those caliber crash (not even using plugins sometimes) while some free software you keep using hours and hours without a single crash… makes one wonder…

Everybody knew we were already in trouble when they bought Alias Maya and XSI lol
These days i would learn Modo. Blender is cool, but something in it doesn’t “click” to me even with custom UI.

I also own perpetual licenses for Autodesk 3dmax2009, Maya 2013, Max2013 and MotionBuilder 2013 (from the time I used to work with motion graphics and advertising for TV). I own the original serial, and the last time I installed these softwares on my actual PC is from since 2013, whenever I purchased an ASUS ROG Notebook with windows 7. I did not have the need to reinstall any of these softwares until now, however, If I ever need to install again and autodesk doesn’t allow me to activate these softwares, I would without any shadow of doubt (and not feeling any remorse) crack my legally owned softwares. All the money and time I spent on these softwares can not be lost! I even tried to move to blender, however I could not get used to it, even though Blender is an amazing piece of software and Free.

Anyway, my opinion is that those users who own perpetual licenses of Autodesk Softwares should crack their softwares if Autodesk doesn’t want to activate.

Cheers!

I agree 200%!

Rule #1: never layout in public your plan to “break the law” — EULA.

Now you now what Autodesk can do everytime you publish something, don’t you? Perhaps an eula audit.

This is true, but in this case when they are at fault, I doubt it.Also a person can always get a audit mail and he can deny the audit.A true audit can only work with a judges permission and that will cost autodesk time and money if they go after everyone. Also I think that no judge in Europe will be in favor to autodesk due to the point 13 from that European document posted.
