Attaching a Particle System Using Sockets to Component

I was having an issue with attaching particle systems to components. In my test environment, I have created a sword that is attached to the VR player characters hand controller blueprint but am one button away from finishing it when I noticed a problem. When I tried to select a skeletal mesh for the instance parameter to attach to, there was no way to select the mesh because it was in the blueprints, and not the world editor. It would be really helpful if someone could give me advice(preferably without changing the whole particle system and just finding a way to select it).
