I discovered the problem. The “fuzz” (facial hair) was causing a strange occlusion with everything behind it. To fix it, I enabled “Scatter scene lighting” and then adjusted the material to make it less bright: increased “ColorMult”, decreased “RoughnessBase”, and tweaked the “EdgeMelanin” a bit.
