Are there any plans to give access to the root files for purchased assets?

Sorry if this is a re-post but I couldn’t find this question being asked before which is hard to believe.

Will Epic ever let us download the root files (fbx, png, obj…)?

Right now everything purchased or, even imported, into your project is converted to a .uasset which is a proprietary file type and can’t be edited. I’m sure there are loads of benefits to using .uasset files for everything while in the engine but there is no way to modify any of the models or textures. IMO this is a huge advantage that the Unity asset store has over the Marketplace. Simple tweaks to models and textures is a pretty big deal at least in my own experience.

I’m just curious how Epic plans to handle this. UE4 has more in-engine ability to modify assets than any other engine I’ve used but it isn’t Maya. Now if Epic was building its own in-engine modeling/texturing program… That would be Epic.

P.s. I’m still holding out for a stand alone shader previewer so I can prototype on my laptop.

You can export to those files. I haven’t seen any asset in UE4 that couldn’t be exported to a stand alone format.

right click the asset in the content browser -> asset actions -> export.

Holy ****, I’m an idiot. Thank you for enlightening me. I don’t know how I’ve missed this for a year but I apologize for wasting your time.

FBX “is” a root file format and is native to MotionBuilder. For that matter it should not be an “export” but a “save” format

What Unreal 4 imports is just the tip of the iceberg and if looking for some new software tools the app, granted my opinion, “MUST” have FBX.
