If I were to livestream (whether in-person or with a virtual “vtuber” avatar) using a background I created in Unreal 4, using assets provided in the Unreal marketplace and/or starter content, would I have to pay any kind of fee or royalty, or express explicit credit in that I used Unreal 4 for the background (for example, stating somewhere in the video/page/description: “Background created using Unreal Engine 4”)? As far as I’m aware, this would be a rather atypical use for the engine, so I wanted to make sure. Thank you very much for any input.
If you are using assets from the Unreal Marketplace or Starter Content in your livestream, you are required to abide by the terms of use for those assets. The terms of use for assets in the Unreal Marketplace can vary depending on the asset and the publisher. In general, most assets in the Unreal Marketplace are licensed for use in commercial projects, but there may be some restrictions or requirements, such as crediting the publisher or paying royalties.
It’s a good idea to review the terms of use for each asset you plan to use in your livestream and make sure you understand and comply with them. I suggest reading both the Unreal Engine EULA and the Marketplace Help Page
The EULA should cover all of the things you need to know. If you are unable to find what you are looking for I suggest that you ask the Unreal Engine Legal Team for more information.
I am not able to give you legal advice, however I think you won’t have to pay any royalties as the primary focus isn’t the background of your service. I have however only dabbed within the games section of Unreal Engine and not the entertainment, TV or Film section.
Best of luck!
Hey @Dhurkst!
To add on a bit more to what @EliasWick explained in detail, in order to ask Unreal Legal questions involving marketplace content or content made by Epic Games, contacting Marketplace Support is the best way to know if the content is okay to use! Here is the like to submit a ticket:
Good luck in streaming your content!
