Archive Project Files Best practice

Hi,
I am looking for best practice tips for archiving old projects. I have run out of space on a 2TB nvme card and so I am backing up my asset creation projects to another drive. I notice that the .dat files created by save rcproj account for 2/3rds my backup.

I am looking for tips as to what you do. For instance:

Is it possible to only keep only the data for the latest version of the Project?

    1. Do you save just the fbx files, control points and the image lists and recreate the files when needed?
    1. Is it possible to edit the .dat files to a slimmed down version?
    1. Is there a way of consolidating only the files used in the project to one place? (So that you are not copying image files which were not used)
