AR on Android with Controls

Is there a way to incorporate the joystick controls (software and hardware) via AR (Augmented Reality)? I mean, i’m looking for a way to move a character on 3rd person perspective using joystick controls of android device.

I would be happy if you guys can just give me a link that i can follow and i’ll do the rest of self study.

My guess would be you could use like image tracking to spawn an actor and then give player control to that actor based on widget controllers? That would be the first thing I would try putting together.
