[APEX Destructibles] In UE4 Destructible Editor, Chunk Ray Trace to Select has very small range, can't select large assets

Dear Epic,

Portion of Editor?
The Destructible Editor

Issue:
I cannot select chunks in the destructible viewport.

Reason:
For very large apex destructible assets, in my case a mountain, the ray trace to click on apex chunks in the UE4 Destructible editor is not long enough!

Solution:
Please extend the range of the trace in the UE4 Destructible viewport scene so that we can click on the individual chunks of a very large apex asset without having to zoom in super close.

Asset For Reference

Feel free to download and test with this asset, it is a very large rock, and if I position camera at a comfortable distance I can’t click on chunks, I have to zoom in very close.

www.lightningfitness.org/ue4code/DesertRock.apb

  1. Please see attached .apb file and import into UE4 4.15 and open the destructible editor.

  2. Set the chunk depth to 1 and move the chunks apart, as if preparing to select them

  3. Now zoom out pretty far, and try to click on the chunks.

  4. You wont be able to click on the chunks, because the ray trace into the scene doesnt go far enough

  5. Now move very close to one of the chunks and try and click on it (you will see blue box when it works)

Picture for Reference

For reference of what I mean by zooming out to comfortable distance, see pic that uses the asset I am providing to you (comes from Vehicle template desert race demo)

Thanks!

Rama

Hey Rama,

Sorry for the delay and I hope all is well.

I can see how this could be aggravating when working with large assets. I entered feature request JIRA UE-43581 and our developers will be investigating further.

Cheers,

TJ

Thank you TJ, very nice to hear from you!
