I’m putting together a system from parts that I have on hand for a nephew who is starting a class in using UE4. I’m thinking of using a HP Z420 workstation running a Xeon E5-1602 @ 3.60 Ghz, a 4Gb - Geforce GTX 960, 32Gbs ECC ram (4x8Gb), 1Tb SSD boot drive and a 2Tb storage drive. Is anyone using anything like this successfully?
Was also considering another system I have laying around, an HP Z800 workstation which I would install the same video card and ram but this system would be running dual Xeon Quads or 6-core cpu’s. Does anyone know if using a system with 2 processors would be helpful? I can’t seem to find anything on the subject.

I recently bought myself a second had HP Z620. With dual Xeon E5-2660’s (total of 16 cores, 32 threads)
My previous CPU was an i5 2500k. While the performance of a single core on the i5 was better, it only has 4 cores. With UE4 and my new system, shader compilation times improved a lot. In addition, with my old i5 I found that when UE was compiling shaders, lighting, etc, then I really couldn’t use my system for much else. With the 16 cores I can easily do some web browsing or just about anything else with ease.
Short answer, yes the Xeon’s will work fine and having more cores will improve speed of anything that can utilize them (and UE4 handles 2 processors fine)… Not to mention there is something rewarding about seeing 32 threads in performance monitor being 100% utilized.
The only thing worth noting is that my Z620 didn’t have the required 8pin Power adapter for the video card. Something you might need to check. Although you can get adapters to convert what you do have to what the card needs.
