In the days of beautiful engines like UE3/4, Cryengine etc. it might seem strange to have invested so much time in a Doom engine project. But it’s always been something I loved as a hobby, but never could grasp skill wise as a young lad back in DEU days in DOS. With the more powerful scripting available in the form of Z-Doom, I ended up making a 9 map (8+1 secret level) project in my spare time. Has it’s own unique end boss, two new weapons (one based on The Unmaker from Doom 64, but I changed the functionality completely.)
It requires GZDoom or Zandronum (run in OpenGL mode) because the skyboxes don’t work properly in software mode, both of which are free. It also requires doom2.wad obviously.

Thank you! Luckily I had a few people help balance test all the way through. I’d never call anything perfect, but I did try to find the right balance in ammo/monster/health ratio (based on skill chosen), as well as puzzle and secret hints/reward. I can’t stand when you load up a .wad and it’s just a million Arch-Viles. I also got feedback about some areas being too boring, so I would then re-adjust that with more monsters and less ammo etc. but I think I found a healthy balance. I was able to beat my levels in Nightmare! with some wuss-filled quicksaving, and alternative approaches to level completion… although it was challenging.
I started programming and messing around with game code once I was 5 but shortly after became a part of the original modding community when DOOM was still shareware and you could grab the disc for $5 at EBGames (Electronic Boutique) and some general retail stores. Love that game and John Romero and John Carmack are huge inspirations for me to this day.
Also, don’t fret about UE4 Once you get going, you will be able to do more much quicker and much better. And not too mention, there is a great community here to help you out if you need it.
Yep, I’m an old Doom and Doom2 fan. I still have my original CD’s (i.e. which where rare back then, most stuff came on 3.5" floppy disks) on the shelve next to the computer.
I don’t know how hard that would be, but if I wanted to see any of my maps in glorious UE4, it would be MAP07. That and MAP09 are by far my favorite creations (besides The Unmaker’s functionality.)
That said, I have updated the link to the (hopefully) final please be bug-free version. I also have a YouTube video playlist of the entire campaign being beaten Ultra-Violence 100% showing all the secrets and easter eggs I have. (A hidden gun, some SGA from Commander Keen, etc.)
