Any advice for someone who has very limited artistic skills?

I’m a software developer, with no particular talent for artistic stuff.
I knew that designing my level would be hard, but it’s getting even tougher.
I know how to use most editor tools and I’m not short on quality assets, but I just don’t have the talent to create environments.

What I’m already doing is to collect pictures from other games and real world landscapes, that would probably help to some extent.
Do you guys have any other advice you think it can be useful here?

Thanks in advance for sharing.

Collecting reference pictures is certainly helpful.

Also, look at other games and see what they’re doing. Stop and look around in different areas of the levels – entry, mid-game, objective, safe place …

And practice. A lot. It took you a long time to become a programmer; it will take a similar amount of time to become a level maker!

If you need to ship a game sooner than that, perhaps pairing up with someone who’s good at the level design could help?
