I just want to start off my question by saying that I am a huge noob. Nowadays, with powerful equipment, if I have nowhere to start that I know of, or if I have no clue what everything does, I honestly can’t really do anything.
Meaning if I’m in a sea of mystery, I have the same sense of direction as a beagle.
I’m looking to basically make a Master of Orion 2 clone, only with more stuff so here are my questions. Does anyone have any advice for me? Where should i start specifically?
Honestly Master of Orion 2 is a 2D game, but I’ll just have to wait until I develop the idea. I ain’t giving up, but UE4 should be powerful enough to make something like it just via blueprints and stuff in the editor itself. I’ll just go and ask the person who told me it is possible, due to playing the game themselves like me.
But yeah, thanks. But I ain’t gonna stop honestly xD I’m just poking around mostly. Blueprints are after all designed with the purpose of being able to make a game without knowing a single bit of coding after all
Chess would be a neat game to do for AI, but honestly… then my question would still stand. Don’t know where to start, I only know about BSP and landscapes xD
But honestly if Idle games have taught me anything, it’s better to just go for something and get it done, than to take the faster route. I do intend on working on it for atleast 2 years.
Still though, thanks, I’ll need the luck.
Give up. Like, right now. XD Just for the time being.
Completely forget about making a game that requires a studio for right now. Seriously. In the future after you have quite a bit of experience then you can start worrying about it but for right now concentrate on learning the basics. I’d suggest blueprints, since C++ has a steeper learning curve. You can find those tutorials anywhere at this point. It’s not that bad, just practice-- a lot.
My suggestion is to challenge yourself to make some simple games that require a decent amount of knowledge. For example, make one or two 2D games, mario/sonic clones with more stuff, for instance. Then take it further and create some target shooting game (3d, ofc) with particle effects you created on your own, your own art assets, that kind of thing. Then move further into making some sort of local (or online if you feel up to it) fps arena game. That should give you the basics behind AI. By then you should be more than acquainted with UE4. That kinda thing is what I would do, anyways. It’s up to you. But it’s too early to be thinking about making a game like that as of now.
Good luck :3
A chess game would be nice too, especially if you’re building an AI-heavy turn-based game like MoO2.
I don’t mean give up at all. I mean set it aside for now. If it were easy, then everyone would do it.
I think you misunderstand what blueprints are… If you can code, then you can do blueprints, and if you can do blueprints, it should be ok-ish to learn code. You are literally coding with blueprints, just visually. The part that makes it easier than making your own engine is well, all the content that UE4 provides you. It doesn’t let a 5 year old kid make Counter Strike in a few days XP And just because you don’t need to know a single bit of coding doesn’t mean anything, that is like saying you don’t need to know a single bit of coding to start learning C++. You don’t. Same with blueprints. But it doesn’t change the fact that you still have to dedicate a lot of time to learning them.
That’s exactly what I mean. Don’t take the faster route. Here’s the issue. You start working on it now, no experience at all. Come a year later, you’re still going to have all that amateurish code/blueprints left behind that you started with that will more than likely be messing up your game. I can guarantee you that you will start your project from scratch more than just a few times if you start on it right now. I’d suggest developing techniques first, and creating a few side games in order to get the hang of what you have to learn to make that game. I don’t know about you, but it would get pretty old re-making that same game over and over again… (happened to me hahahaha X’D)
Yeah, that’s what I mean XP Don’t sit back and just wait for tutorials though
Np :3
It’s really not that bad. But it’s not like you have to learn it. I find myself actually working quicker with blueprint, haha XD

Well, you can just dive right into blueprints, all it takes is practice and patience. That’s what I ended up doing anyways X’D
No need to thank me haha :3 Let me know if you need anything else
Ahhh, right, i see what you mean. I want to take my time. I’ve decided that I’m going to start off with something simple, just a simple FPS and work my way up. When the more better developers start working on strategy games similar to what I wanna make and tutorials eventually appear, I’ll take a look at them
Thanks for the video also, it’s helped quite a lot
But yeah. I’ll also take a look at learning C++ it shouldn’t be too hard to get my feet wet. since I’ve already done that with Javascript.
I’ll indeed set it aside for now, I understand what you’re saying
I’ll start simple and get some experience at the right pace, will probly start with modding UT about as heavily as I can manage and go from there. It will be slightly transferable I figure.
Thanks so much for the help
