Announcing Fab, an Evolution of the Unreal Engine Marketplace

5 points from a HUGE! buyer viewpoint with HUGE! good and bad experiences lol:

    1. This new platform is a very good idea for buyers who spend days and nights to try to find specific 3D products like sci-fi vehicles or sci-fi robots with REAL FUN! design and FULL! animations and TOTALY! compatible with the last version of Unreal engine (5.1) and all target platforms (including mobile phones!) .
    1. Thanks to implement a new system with indicators which will help buyers to trust sellers on the frequent release each 6 months and compatibility of their products before buying it and finding that the sellers don’t have the time to update the little broken code or asset before 2000 years lol !
    1. Thanks to implement a new system which will make mandatory a FULL! documentation and some FULL! video tutorials on the products of the sellers.
    1. The licenses (and crediting authors) must be clear enough and notified clearly by icons for buyers like indie developers who wants to make some commercial uses of the resources that they are buyings in the development of their video games for example.
    1. Law of murphy: When a seller make a LOW POLY STATIC FBX model , he should keep in mind that one day a buyer will ask for a HIGH POLY ANIMATED FBX model too lol

The Orca Games Full Animations Bundle, which resold Mixamo animations without permission and some sound bundle, which has been removed shortly after.

You can read more about it here in this discussion.

It seems like you’re approaching this as if it’s simply a change in social media platforms. The issue at hand is not just about liking a new thing, but rather about financial gain. If the government enacts regulations regarding how games can be sold and published, Epic Games would have cause for concern, just as I do.

Rright, I wasn’t intending to dive fully into all of the disputed points, reasons and factors, just one of the aspects that crossed my mind.

  1. I think it has to do a very complicated job on the screening system.
For example, how to quickly and accurately find what I need in the huge asset library.
This is not a simple combination of several keywords, it requires a detailed systematic classification.

like this,Screenshot of a used website.
It is Ugly, But detailed and efficient.

  1. The distribution of certificates must also be classified in detail.

  2. I used sketchfab before, and I wanted to sell models, but the application for sale must be applied through the google website, and I cannot log in to google in my region China. I still have a large number of high-quality models in the computer, and I want to sell them. ( Of course you can use something like a VPN, but it’s very insecure about money, and I see no reason to use an illegal network for selling stuff.)

Uh, just add Alipay/WeChat/China UnionPay payment, etc.

for 1 Supplement: My idea is to create many large categories, and some small categories are customized by the uploader.
The advantage of this is that it solves the problem that classification is always flawed.
For example, I made a “hammer” model, but there is no “hammer” category in the screening system.
But after the uploader created a new “hammer” category. He knew he should put him in “hardware tools”

The category “Hardware Tools” was created by the website development team

In addition, if the buyer is searching, there will also be some useful filters, such as performance, the number of triangles is more suitable, mobile phone, PC game, or film and television. Or non-professional (due to non-professional, or out of The model released for the purpose of pure hobby, some places are not very reasonable, and more processing work is required to apply it to the project)
Or whether the rendering style is cartoon rendering or realistic rendering. The general direction is simple to filter.
This saves most of the retrieval time for the downloader.

From the Content EULA:

Epic agrees, whether or not Licensed Content is NoAI Content, that it will not use Licensed Content or license Licensed Content to third parties for use in connection with Generative AI Programs, unless that Licensed Content is owned by Epic.

There it is, So you give yourself a free pass, EPIC will use it to create their own AI 3D dataset? Will artists that you use have free and exclusive access to the algorithm and machinery to run ai? What would be the benefit to an artist or coder to involve themselves with someone who in a few years plans to stab them in the back like you did with illustrators?

As a buyer and not a seller, I’m not sure if this will be easier or more confusing.

  1. I have done a search when I came over from Unity last year and found some rpg kits to get started with. On another search, I discovered a rpg kit that was exactly what I wanted. It did not show up on my initial search and that kit was published before I came over from Unity. So are the searches going to be more complicated with many more assets (that are not specifically for Unreal) added to the search pile?
  2. How confusing is it going to be to weed thru Godot, Fortnite, etc assets to find the UE assets we want?
  3. Sometimes when you purchase single models (Sketchfab) the model does not match with the rest of the style of the author of the main scene you are working on. It will be easier to find and get complete scenes on Marketplace.
  4. Will Megascans still be free for UE users?
  5. Will we still have “Free for the Month”?

Epic agrees…that it will not use Licensed Content…for use in connection with Generative AI Programs

This unified marketplace could be really beneficial to devs. My concern is the hegemony of Epic. There are few independent 3D marketplaces left. The use cases Fab is promoted sounds similar to those at MetaMundo.co

I see so many issues with FAB. I’ve been selling UE asset packs and projects for 4 years now so I have a pretty good idea how things have evolved during these years and what are the pros and cons about Unreal Marketplace. I’m really thankful for these 4 years despite a few issues.

  1. Every year there are more and more users who don’t know even the basics of how to use Unreal Engine and with FAB that user base will explode exponentially. This integration will merge stores that each have their own characteristics. There will be people who like to use assets with UEFN, Unity users etc… This will then increase the amount of support we need to give as sellers and most of us are very limited with resources for that.

  2. Even if you could create a discovery system that would help users to find correct content, this merging will increase the amount of products there are, so “some” products will always get less attention compared to what Marketplace offers now. There is so much you can display on the screen at the same time. So it’s very realistic to think that revenue will drop for most of us?

  3. I see lots of issues and problems with this generic approach where assets can be used in so many places/softwares. What really happens if I’m currently selling only hi-quality, complex UE asset packs that contain UE specific things (Blueprints, materials, animations etc…)? How can I prevent people from buying assets that they think they can use in Unity for example? This is going to be a nightmare unless you build lots of restrictions and “Are you sure” checks. Otherwise there will be lots of refunds that customers are addressing.

  4. What was the real motivation for this change? I can see a few but is it because of the new UEFN? If so then I think Epic is placing way too much weight on that single IP. What about the engine and the whole game dev ecosystem that was flourishing years ago when UE4 went free? It feels like the focus is going all over the place right now and this has been happening since the UE5 launch. Can I really trust that things will stay pretty much the same?

  5. Will there be any DRM this time because pirating still exists?

Sorry if I sound very pessimistic but as a seller I don’t honestly see many positive things in this change expect the possible benefit of having a larger customer base. I just want to be realistic here. Instead I see lots of question marks and possible issues that can force sellers like me to simply step away because the store will explode in so many directions. I previously sold assets in Unity Assetstore before it exploded too and lost its initial focus. Only thing I can do right now is to share my thoughts and hope FAB will work as advertised, I really do because it would be a shame if you turn your back for us. After all, I feel that we are partners and I hope that it stays that way.

You should quote the full sentence:

Epic agrees, whether or not Licensed Content is NoAI Content, that it will not use Licensed Content or license Licensed Content to third parties for use in connection with Generative AI Programs, unless that Licensed Content is owned by Epic.

This means Epic could use content for their own AI-generation dataset, which is what the question was about.

Get indie developers and marketplace sellers to move to UEFN and start making fortnite mini-games. In addition, a huge store is more convenient for UEFN users.

That’s not what this says. Read it carefully. It says Epic will neither use licensed content nor license it to third parties. It forbids both.

That’s correct. Per the EULA, Epic will not use licensed content in generative AI programs unless we own the content.

Hi,

I am Artstation Marketplace seller, I have over 200 product ( Video tutorials and brush sets for photoshop / procreate). I live in Turkey. Paypal is not active for turkey, I use Artstation’s direct deposit method. Will this payment methods same for fab ? My most friends also using direct bank deposit worldwide. Will we be able to use Artstation marketplace’s payout methods for seller with fab ? Will fab support worldwide direct bank deposit same as Artstation ? We have concerns about that since paypal doesnt work for some countries. If only payout option will be hyperwallet it will be really bad for me and my seller friends, hyperwallet dont work for my country. Artstation and other stores have different payout methods, plase keep them same for bring us more option and keep our payouts.

will it be compatible with Linux?

We want to make sure Turkish sellers still have options with Fab. For UE Marketplace, while we use Hyperwallet, we continue to coordinate payments to our sellers in Turkey, and I expect that to continue.

We aren’t prepared to announce anything regarding Linux yet.

I am really grateful to you Josh for this information, I feel so happy now ! I have over 200 products and its my only income in Turkey, I left my job 5 years ago for create products for Artstation marketplace (as main job), and i have family. I am very happy to hear that you will continue to support Artstation’s current payouts methods with fab. Thank you for caring us  It looks like will be great platform.

Hi Josh @Unreal_Josh,

All this marketplace sounds really exciting! We have our own-developed game engine, but we frequently buy assets on Quixel - and it’d be really great to integrate Fab with our in-house tools (export-import tasks, using Fab assets in our editor easily). Is there any documentation about the API, or maybe an available alpha API to start the process as early as possible?
