A common workflow in Photoscan to get two stubborn chunks (components) to align is to add common images to each, and then “merge chunks.”
I’ve been trying to do something similar in RC, but it isn’t working, at least to join these two components:
screen22.jpg
screen23.jpg
The selected cameras are the ones that also appear in the other component. Both are shown in top view.
I have tried several methods to merge these two chunks:
- Delete all components but keep control points and align from scratch.
- Delete the smaller components and set “Enabled in component” to False for all images in the overlapping area and a few surrounding and align.
- Set “Force component rematching” to True, put the faraway already registered part of the big component in a pose group, and align.
I could try adding more control points but it seems like a weird thing to do because I would be adding control points between images that are already registered – in fact, registered in two different components.
Am I headed in the right direction here? Has anyone else merged two components in which a set of images is shared?
Hi Aaron Curtis
you can set that for alignment is used “overlapping” images. When importing COMPONENT, go to the component images and change it.
Hi Wishgranter. I’m sorry, I didn’t understand your post at all, although it seems potentially helpful. Could you rephrase it please?
In case you are saying that I need to have “Enable alignment” for the overlapping images set to True, note that that is how I have it set in each of the scenarios above.

So scroll down the screenshot and there can see you can use OVERLAPPING images to be used for alignment…
Sorry that I didn’t think to scroll down! This looks good. So, which images should I set “Features source” to “Merge using overlaps” to? All images in both components? Or for just the smaller component? Or should I only set it on the images that are present in both components?
Hi Aaron Curtis
If you are sure to have same images in both components then set the whole component to use “overlapping” and hit alignment
