Aligning Ground

I have a model I’ve made of a flat plate with some machined cut-outs. Came out great but the problem is the model isn’t quite aligned flat. So in ortho depth view its difficult to measure the depths of the features.

Is there a way to align the model flat other than eyeballing it and manually adjusting the define ground function? Ideally it could be done off control points i set on the plate surface.

Hi Nick Trevean

If its plain plastic-metal or etc subject with no features detected then its clear that is not suited for photogramemtry. Can show us singel image what sort of material it is ?

Hi WG,

It’s metal but has surface rust which results in lots of unique features that the software picks up. The sparse point cloud preview from aligning alone looks reasonable because it find so many points. So I don’t think there is a problem there.

The issue is perhaps when I sit the plate on my table its not perfectly flat, and its obvious in the ortho-depth view because one corner is red and the opposite corner is blue. I can try and even it out my manually adjusting the angle of the model’s ground but its quite difficult. I’m hoping there is a better way than manually twisting the model around.

Well, for one thing it’s obvious that it came out well and for another, he SAYS so…

Flat surfaces from only one side are always tricky, because the slightes errors will add up.
I once hat a 70 m long perfectly straight wall that was at first curved at about 2 m.

I would just measure the length and width and add GCPs at all 4 corners with “selfmade” coordinates.
The re-align.
If it did not turn out well enough, delete all components first and then align again.
Would be curious if that does the trick…
