Alembic Camera Export has a bug. Undistort Images messes up the names

Hello there,

I have exported a couple of alembic and export setting files, that illustrate what is going on. I sent those Alembic files and export setting xml files to support allready, but also wanted to see if this is a known issue here in the forums.

Basically, when I want to export from RC a mesh together with all of the cameras into an Alembic file, as soon as I tell the exporter to undistort the images, the resulting camera names in the Alembic file get messed up. Thing is, I need those camera names to stay intact.

This is what I do. I export the mesh and choose Alembic as file format. Then I get to choose other options, as in the images below. Then I export the file and import it into Maya.

Here is what happens:

  1. The first Alembic file uses the “undistort images” feature deactivated and exports fine, with all cameras named exactly like the images in my project.

  2. The second Alembic file has the “undistort images” feature activated. If I import this alembic, then all the camera names are wrong. They are named png, png1, png2 … etc.

This is, as I said, a huge problem, because I need the names to stay intact as well as export the cameras using the undistort function.

I am using the version 1.4.1.117425 at work. (Enterprise License). Ialso tested this at home with the version 1.4.1.117424 that I use privately at home with the same results.

Either way. This is clearly a bug and we would sure like to have this fixed as soon as possible, because it is a bit of a show stopper for us.

I sure hope you can help.

Cheers

Hello Guillaume,
the export settings are using the settings from Export images naming convention.
To export the actual names of the cameras, you need to set this convention to original file name before exporting cameras. After this settings change, you can set Export images back to No.

Hello Ondrej,

thanks for the help. This is a good workaround, but it would be nice if the exported settings XML file would also include those enties, even if the feature is disabled in the settings. That way if you, by mistake, messed up those parameters, and you load the settings, it would also set the parameters for the image export, even when you don’t want to export images but only cameras.

It is a bit confusing, that when you have both “undistort images” and “export images” deactivated, the camera names stay as the original file name, no matter what you have set under the hidden export images parameter list.

It is only when you want to export the cameras with “undistort images” activatedm that RC uses the settings under export images no matter what.

I still hope this will be treated as a bug and fixed, but still thank you for the workaround. We will use it.

Cheers

Guillaume
