AIController Activation

We have a number of AI Controlled characters in our game. Being a game, many of our AIs are a long ways away from the player.

When you’re near an AI, they behave exactly as we expect them to - they follow the behavior tree, act on sight and sound, and generally life is good.

But, when they’re far away, they just stand still.

Does anyone know what controls this activation? I’ve tried increasing their hearing, LODHearing, and sight ranges (both on AIController and on Pawn Sensing Component), made sure that Enable Sensing Updates is on. Nothing I do seems to affect the activation. Once they’ve been activated once, they seem to continue fine, but I need to figure out how to get them activated without walking to them.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.
