The Sync option retrieves the latest version of the project that was Checked In.
On your friends machine, you need to Check In the changes made on that machine using the Check In Changes button on the bottom right hand side of your editor. After that, you can use the Sync Latest button on the bottom right hand side of your editor to retrieve those changes.
