This sculpture is a stylized representation of the Benin FESTAC mask, also known as the Queen Idia mask. It features an elongated face with scarification marks, almond-shaped eyes, and an elaborate crown-like hairstyle, resting on a patterned pedestal. Inspired by the original ivory mask of Queen Idia—the mother of Oba Esigie who ruled the Benin Kingdom in the early 16th century—it symbolizes royal power and maternal influence. A replica of this mask was used as the emblem of the 1977 FESTAC in Lagos, making it an enduring icon of African cultural heritage.
