Advanced Climbing System

Hi Bugmee !
What’s the progress of your system ? Someone sign up to create animations ? When do you share demo of your system ?

Looking awesome m8…

Currently I’m trying to work something out with another user to get some animations up and running. As far as the demo is concerned it will probably be available in about 2 weeks since I won’t be available for the whole next week.

Thanks a lot

Msg me by all means if you want tester etc… =)

Will do

Update:

I have prepared a small test level (pretty much the same level you can see in the WIP4-Video). The test level is equipped with all 3 climbing types included in the system (Brick = Red, Ledge = Green, Vine = Blue). Anyone who’s interested can join in on the fun and check out the climbing system. If you happen to find any bugs I would really appreciate it if you could notify me and provide me with some basic instructions on how to recreate the bug(a video showing of the bug is very much appreciated). If you have any suspicions as to what could be causing the bug I would also very much like to hear it.

Basic overview of the controls:
Z - Restart level
W/A/S/D - If you are hanging on a ledge/brick/vine you can move around with W/A/S/D (W = hop to ledge above, S = hop to ledge below, A/D = move right/left)
Space - Jump to ledge/brick/vine and climb to surface if you are already on a ledge/vine/brick
Q - Drop from ledge/brick/vine
Left Shift - Sprint

Hello, sorry for my english, thank you for this system, hope to see in the marketplace soon, i tryed your executable, but i have a problem with the first jump to the ledge in front, after the stair, that seems to be too far from, I cannot jump too long to reach that part(tryed many times), anyway great climbing system.

Hey @3dstuff,

Did you sprint before jumping? Use the shift key to sprint and gain more speed. That way the jump should be doable. For the sake of completeness, I’ll edit my previous post to also display the shift key and its functionality

Ok i reached that spot, :), now for my opinion you need to refine your already good system, small animations like light touches near walls and jumping low walls while running, you can add ledge jumps while running(short/small walls, fences), jump down and grab a ledge below you from a normal idle position, double-side ledges(jump from side to side of a fence/ledge), jump and somersault(?) from high spots, like a real balcconer, i see the “tube” ledge which is cool.
my 2 cents
All the best

Great ! I could finally play demo of your system. I really like it and I can’t wait to see new animations !
You should add function to jump down and grab a ledge below you from a normal idle position like said 3dstuff. It’s very important and you should implement this .
Still great job Bugmee  You rock !

Thanks for the feedback @RatAs1171, @3dstuff
I’ll try to keep your suggestions in mind.

I’d really welcome it if I could gather some more beta testers so that I can find as many bugs as possible and fix them. @unit23, @OneShotGG, @Outrospection, @Conkerballs, @majorcyto Your help would be greatly appreciated.

@Bugmee I’ll jump on this after work tomorrow.

Thanks for the mention lost track of this.

Is there any update on this system? Are you still looking for beta testers?

Yes, indeed. I’m still looking for some testers that are willing to find as many bugs as they can  You can find all necessary information in the following quote.

Let me know if you find any bugs or unusual behaviour

A few things I’ve noticed. If you climb the ladder down and get to the bottom step, character continues in place to step down. Also theres no way to start climbing down the ladder once you reached the top of the platform. The ladder climbing animation needs refinement, right now it looks like character tries to grab every second step of the ladder but in fact uses every step. But I guess animations are placeholders right now (?)

It would be great if the character could let go of a ledge, fall and grab the next one. Let’s say you hit jump, then character let’s go off the ledge. If you hit jump again and there is a ledge to grab, character grabs it. Reason for this: I think player would feel more in control, when he can let go of the ledge. Not being able to ‘sc** up’ a climb breaks immersion imho.

Otherwise I really like your system. Do you use root motion for the climbing?

Thanks a lot for your feedback. The animations are indeed placeholders since I am not allowed to redistribute them due to Mixamos terms of use. As for the regarding the player not being able to miss a ledge while jumping, that is customizable. I have a setting called “Require Skill”, that you can switch on or off. If you switch it on, the player has to press space midair (while he is near the ledge of course) to grab the ledge. If his timing is not correct the player wont grab on to the ledge and fall down. I had disabled the setting for the demo level since I thought that the demo level should not require any skill

Thanks  I only use root motion when the player is climbing up to the surface. All the other movements are dynamic.

Maybe you can get in contact with Jonas Mølgaard. He is working on some climbing animations and they look pretty decent. I think he’s also here on the forum. Check it out: WIP4 - Climbing animations - YouTube

The skill system sounds nice. I would definitely put this into a seperate area in the demo level, since it’s a really cool  If it’s not possible already it should be possible to specify an animation for a missed grab so player has feedback that character tried.

Do you have a development schedule or ETA on release?

Btw. your interaction system on youtube looks very promising as well… both systems would make a great foundation for an adventure game. Instant buy for me.

Bugmee I am going to be looking at this later tonight… well done sir.

Hi Bugmee!
Any news on your great climbing system? Did you manage to sort out the animations?
Thanks!

Some cool assassins creed stuff going on here
