About ADF Navigation

The Automatic Direction Finder (ADF). An aircraft radio navigation system which senses and indicates the bearing to a low/medium frequency radio beacon ground transmitter.

The Non-Directional Beacon (NDB). NDB is the most commonly used, in aviation, ground transmitter operating in low/medium frequency bands. The NDB is recognizable by the morse code identifier (the two/three letter facility identifier) that is broadcast continuously.

The ADF system consists of the receiver and a bearing indicator (Relative Bearing Indicator fix/movable card and Radio Magnetic Indicator).

Relative Bearing indicator (Fix Card). A navigation instrument with a fixed compass card that indicates the direction to a selected navigation facility and indicates the bearing with respect to the heading of the aircraft.

Relative Bearing indicator (Movable Card). A navigation instrument with a manually adjustable compass card that indicates the direction to a selected navigation facility and indicates the bearing with respect to the heading of the aircraft.

Radio Magnetic indicator. A navigation instrument coupled with a magnetic compass that indicates the direction to a selected navigation facility and indicates the bearing with respect to the heading of the aircraft.
