Add Unreal Engine in an existing app

Is it possible to add the Unreal Engine in an existing iOS app? I just want to create a ViewController and put a game to render in that.

Thank you.

It wouldn’t be crazy simple like just adding a view to an existing app (there is a lot of global structure the engine assumes).

However, it wouldn’t be hard to take UE4 and add other views/controllers into the hierarchy. We do have one main view (FIOSView) that we create with a basic controller around it. You would need to initialize the engine to go along with it (the view object isn’t the “root” of the engine, the view is integrated in the IOS implementation of the engine scaffolding, if that makes sense).

I would look at IOSAppDelegate, and also the SlateViewer code, which is a small program that runs on IOS without the full 3D engine, but will initialize UE4 from its main code (see IOSSlateViewerMain.cpp).

Right! Thank you. And what about Android? Is that soo hard like thousands of JNI calls?

Hard to say, depends on your app I suppose… I don’t think there’s necessarily much you’d have to do extra because we run the engine in another thread, so it will just take care of itself.

I am not too familiar with interfacing a view into Android Java view hierarchies… but shouldn’t be unpossible :slight_smile:

Thank you! It help me a lot! I will try to validate it as soon as I can and will post the results here!

Were you able to make any progress on this? I have the same interest. I’d like to add UE4 content into an existing app. Conceptually akin to:

myUE4View = UE4View(…)
self.view.addSubview(myUE4view)
