Absolutely at my wits end - 'Failed to load XXX referenced by YYY' - PLEASE can anyone help? Been trying for months and game is due to release on Steam.

hey guys. my game is due to release on Steam, been working on it day and night for over a year and a half. and within the past month, i’ve suddenly started getting an error when opening the project (it still opens though, just spits out the error) AND the packaged game does a Fatal Error! crash whenever exiting the game through the Quit Game buttons.

i’m absolutely begging for help. this has given me numerous headaches, stress, and i’m boiling hot from literally trying for months to fix thi issue, non stop. i cannot fix it.

the error when opening the project is this: **(please don’t judge for the reference to HorrorEngine, i originally started the project with it but I literally DO NOT use HorrorEngine in the project, it was just a mistake starting the project with it and i got too far in to start anothe project)
Failed to load /Game/HorrorEngine/Blueprints/Structures/SaveStructures/InventorySave.InventorySave Referenced by Retake”
**
and the fatal error crashes when running the packaged game:

  • occur when quitting the game. Quit Game? Yes > it successfully quits, but after it’s quit instantly throws the FATAL ERROR! message without giving literally any detail.
  • the fatal crashes also occur when completing the game, and navigating to the menu, then clicking a level to start from.

’Retake’ inside Inspectable, (A BP from horror engine) is literally just a completely empty purple node which says Retake, with ‘Inventory Save’ as a blue pin on it - none of it connects to anything. i have not modified this in any way. also, my older backups which does NOT have the error, also looks identical: also the single purple Retake node.

Please help anyone, thanks so much

Hey there, good old referencing errors eh!

My first thought to try would be to delete the “Retake” function inside inspectable if it is serving no purpose in your finished game? I know it is heavily overwritten in the derived blueprints within Horror Engine but I’m not sure how much of that is still present in your current game.

If however that is not an option, I’m assuming that the struct was deleted, hence why it couldn’t be loaded. You could simply recreate that exact named struct in that exact same location, either by copying it from a clean version of Horror Engine or Just creating a new struct yourself.

If you are using horror engines interactable blueprints then that Retake function is being used quite heavily so it would be good to try and reinstate the struct if necessary.
