What are the benefits of using Datasmith? and whats the difference from using Datasmith and just manually Exporting files from 3DS Max as FBX?
I don’t suppose there are any alternatives to NOT use Datasmith?

from 3ds Max to UE you can do FBX, USD, glTF or uDatasmith files.
With datasmith the exporter is tailored to export has much details as possible from 3dsMax to UE. So you will have better management of scene, better material transfer etc. at least better than FBX.
