About the Level designer

Hi, guys, I am a newbie to lever design. I would like to ask you if all projects need to build a white box in the preparation phase.

White boxing is up to you. If you feel you don’t it, then don’t use it. But it can really help to get the proportions and feel of the level right, before you start to put details in.

In additon to what @ClockworkOcean said, apart from the very important first impression of proportions, it can also be important to have some basic layout for testing the game logic itself like collisions that can be tested early this way without having too detailed final models in the scene. Useful for example for AI that can be done while final modeling still takes place.

I rarely whitebox
I just start building using asset packs
It never made sense to create a block then replace everything
