About starting game dev

I have an important question! What kind of computer specs i would need when making games? Im making adventure game probably open world. Hope someone can answer from experiance and knowledge over computer strengths. i ended up looking up for 96 gb ram, amd ryzen 9 9950X3d, nvidia 5090 32 gb, 4 tb ssd nvme double the speed of next, 1tb ssd nvme kingston fury renegade. Either my setup is an overkill or it is perfect. Would like to know what is the best setup since paying 11k for 2 pc (since team of 2) is a lot. Really waiting for answers and hope ill get good news.

I think, but its just a guess that this is overkill. If you dont go to like hyperrealistic graphics with some out of space physics system

For example my system uses RTX2080, I7-9700K and only have 32GB and i run UE5.6 without FPS Drops… but yes it depending on how you optimize your future game → LOD, Materials, Textures…

I mean RAM is good, but more RAM is better… in the END your future Playerbase probably don’t want a 11k (or 5.5k) to play your game too

But thats just my opinion

Yeah you certainly won’t need that.

I do agree with @callfreak, but I’d recommend at least an RTX 4070 level card. As for the CPU, you go with one that’s appropriate for your chosen GPU.

The minimum officially recommended RAM capacity for UE 5 is 32 GB btw, and 8 GB for VRAM. 64 GB would be even better, but there’s absolutely no reason to go over that.

If the project’s truly gonna be an open world game with fairly realistic graphics, the specs I mentioned above can actually suffice. But since we don’t know exactly what you have in mind, here are the specs you’ll wanna go for to be safe:

  • 64 GB DDR5 RAM
  • 16 GB VRAM
  • 1 TB SSD (not for the system, 1 TB should suffice especially if it’s dedicated to the project)
  • A RTX 4080 level card (AMD is also fine btw. And realistically you’ll probably only manage to find a 50 series card, but no worries 12 GB of VRAM is also great if you end up getting a 5070, possibly more than enough if you’re not gonna work on very large & realistic scenes. Still I’d pick 4080 / 4080 Super over 5070, and also 4080 / 4080 S over 5070 Ti but that depends on price & priorities, you should probably prefer 5070 Ti over 4080 / 4080 S if you’re a gamer)
  • An appropriate CPU (For example R7 7800X3D is appropriate for a 4080 level card. What you have in mind, R9 9950X3D, isn’t actually much better. If in your region they’re similarly priced, sure why not go with R9 9950X3D? But if not, it’s not really worth it. And both in gaming and game development, CPU is rarely the reason behind performance issues. Most of the time it’s RAM and VRAM. Btw Intel is also fine.)

Hope these help! :innocent:

i found a 5090 for relativeluy cheap price. Also i thought since the unreal engine is constantly updating and the moer updates the more options, and more options mean more storage and hardware power needed. So i also like at the futureproof.

And i dont like intel i have had problems with intel in the past, but i havent had problems with AMD

Cool! Then obviously, you won’t have any limitations while developing your game.

Just make sure to have a quality and powerful enough power supply, and watch out for those melting cables
