Hello everyone, this new environment proyect im gonna work on is an abandoned mall, the idea is that its a shopping mall left to abandonment due to a nuclear war, that destroyed lots of areas and untied a strange virus that devastated lots of cities and left behind few survivors that look for supplies and shelter.
Heres the initial pitch of the idea with the blocking in Unreal:
This week I planned out the environment, adding more references of the assets im gonna create and plan everything out with due dates. Also I added some referential colors in the blocking and made some changes to show and represent better the idea for the environment.
This week I completed the whole modular system, creating the walls, pillars, floors and roofs, for the roofs I created 4 different types that im gonna switch between to avoid repetition, also part of the modular system is the stores which are gonna be around the mall itself, for these I created 6 different types using modular parts that let me vary them as well and the food court store which is a different one from these.
This is a very gorgeous layout and matches your references well! Is this going to be a vague blast in the past to a 2000’s mall after the nuclear war? Either way, I am thoroughly excited to see your progression into this post-apocalyptic scene!
This week my main focus was to finish all the UVs for the modular assets I made, also I created a new type of roofs for the modular system as well to be used on the food court area as it needed to be a little smaller. With this done, I applied the textures to almost all main assets, just remaining the textures for the stores mainly and some roofs and walls on the arcade section. For the texture work I also created a trimsheet for the pillars that needed a little detail at the base.
This week I made adjustments to the UVs of the remaining modular assets that needed them, also I applied textures to the Food Court roofs, and I will apply textures to the stores in this coming week. I also focused on making the skylight, which I modeled, made the UVs and applied textures to it. To create some more variation to the stores I also created two types of metal roll-up doors and made the textures for them. Finally I made the first lighting pass to give it a more darkish look, but I will keep making more changes to the lighting to reach a more sad or scary look of abandonment.
This week I applied textures to the remaining stores that needed them, I also modeled and textured completely various assets: bench, a large bench, the food court chair and table. After bringing those textures and placing then in Unreal, I made a second lighting pass, which in my opinion now resembles much better the intention of a sad, abandoned, cold look, I took advantage much better of the skylight as well, creating sunrays coming from it with the volumetric fog. Also I made a really important first pass of the set dressing of the scene, applying lots of decals all over the scene now looking much dirty and abandoned.
This week I focused on creating more assets and the cinematics, the assets I did this week were the electric stairs, which I texturized with tilable textures, the trays with different color variations, the flag, and the display totems. I also made advancements in the model of the arcade machines, which are almost completely modeled and then I’ll texture it. Finally I created 6 cinematics to showcase better the environment!
This week I finished the arcade machines asset, with 2 different variations, I modeled and applied textures to the fountain and also made the shopping basket, which I had to model again as Maya had issues and the model had lots of issues of non manifold geometry, but redoing it worked, so it took more time than planned but i finished the asset. Finally I did another pass on lighting making it more darker to give a more abandoned look than before. Also I plan to make the flag use the cloth tool simulation which im gonna work on this week as well with more assets and improving the scene!
