As publishers we don’t know the buyers and we have no way for finding out whether the buyer have bought the right license or not.
How does FAB make sure that someone or a company with more-than 100000 revenue, Does not buy the personal license instead of the professional?
Does FAB have access to their revenue when they buy something from FAB?
on my country (Finland) the revenue of a company is public information. Goverment provides the revenue details of every registered company. The revenue of a company is public on many other countries aswell.
Examples:
Supercell and Remedy
So if you do notice that a company (probably registered indie company) has bought your asset, you might try to check from google if there is revenue information available.
But honestly, most company owners dont want to ruin their bussiness by missleading a thirdparty asset seller and then getting sued for that, atleast i would not if i was working on my own indie company, that would ruin my bussiness.
Thanks for sharing the information, I did not know that.
Another question came to my mind after reading this, Does FAB check the buyers revenue?
As publishers FAB do not provide us with any information about the buyer’s name or company so it’s almost impossible for us (Publishers) to check it .
when i have bought some assets from marketplace or fab, they have not checked my revenue. I have bought from fab only once since there is a copyright problem on assets at the moment (discussed on another topic).
oh i always tought the seller gets the byers email and name from transactions, you dont get to know any information about the byers?
if this is the case, that seller gets 0 info about byers, then there is room for improvement… seller can not possibly know how their assets are used if you dont get any info about byers… even if the company revenue is public info, how would seller search for it without any info?
That’s right, Sellers don’t get any information about the buyers.
Epic do not even send us an email regarding our sales.
A few years ago I worked as an Environment artist on a one time project. The client was a company and sent me a package to use in his project.
He told me he had bought it. I used the package and finished his project but in the last day, one of his actions made me think maybe he has not really bought it.
So I find the pack creators and emailed them.
It turned out that my client, A studio with multiple people, Had bought the personal license 300 USD instead of the indie license 1500 USD.
So I told him and asked him to buy the right license since I was worried that it could create legal problems for me!
He refused and pressured me to send him the project files! Then I refused because I did not want to be a part of his fraud.
That’s why I asked this question, There are still people who buy the cheaper license however they are a company or have more than 100000 USD revenue.
I think Epic should share the buyers information with the sellers or at least create a mechanism that avoid such issues.
Maybe such a mechanism exists in FAB, I’m just asking to find out.
There are 2 different questions here imo. The first is: Are Epic monitoring? Do they care, or do they care enough maybe. … The second is, do they have the capability to monitor? Going to offer a guess which is all anyone can do: NO + YES. There are a lot of other FAB threads covering this discussion if you search. Conclusion… Its just an honor system and that’s it. There is no real enforcement afaik.
As for public disclosure? Many firms hide behind shell corps / partnerships / trusts / private firms. So public information only goes so far. But there’s analytics / telemetry within UE to offer strategic info to Epic to infer big earners. Small fish? Probably escape scrutiny.
