A question... about questions! From a first time poster.

Hi. I’m pretty much a noob when it comes to UE4, despite putting in a fair number of hours I know practically nothing. Now, I’d like to make use of the these forums as a resource for finding stuff out, but at the same time I don’t want to irritate people with constant, basic questions, or otherwise breach forum etiquette.

I guess what I want to ask is, how much can I get away with in terms of posting specific questions about how to do stuff? I’m well aware that I could probably find out the answer to any question I have by poring over the documentation, or watching tutorials, or scanning the forums here for similar questions. And I do do all those things. But sometimes it can take frinking ages to find what I’m after, often because I have no idea where to look, and I feel like I’d be better served by just asking someone. But I’m sure that gets frustrating for pros, when they’re asked a question for the 20th time, and the question is so basic that they can’t believe anyone would still not know the answer.

So, yeah, if I burst onto the forums with a whole bunch of noob questions, how will I be greeted? With scorn? Impatience? Enthusiasm? Indifference?

Thanks for reading

As long as you’re respectful it should be fine, and you seem respectful enough. For example, if you have 3 questions, don’t make 3 threads and waste space. Don’t bump your thread several times per hour. Don’t ask something like, how do you naked an open world mmo when you don’t know anything about game development. Other than that you should be fine. This isn’t the unity forums after all

Make specific and detailed questions. I see lots of beginners asking fussy one sentance questions, that even if you understand them will take a long time to answer. That doesn’t make anyone inclined to answer.

If you do show you are dedicated and value others time by explaining your problem carefully, maybe with screenshots, you will have a much greater chance to get a firefly and useful answer.

Cheers!

Oh hey, cheers  I’ve definitely spent much time ploughing my way through your vast wealth of resources, there are just so many awesome official and unofficial tutorials, it’s fantastic, but also daunting :stuck_out_tongue:

Anyway, thanks for the responses, folks. I do have a follow up question, actually. Would you guys recommend I start my own WIP thread? I’m working on a project, a kind of JRPG-inspired thing, I’m hoping it’ll end up being something coherent, but mainly it’s just a massive learning experience for me. I really like the idea of having a thread where I can track my own progress, mainly for my own benefit, but since it’s such a noobish and basic thing I’m not sure if I should make a thread there, amongst the projects being made by, y’know, people who know what they’re doing :stuck_out_tongue: But it’d be great to get feedback and responses, seems like a pretty friendly community here, I suspect people would realise that I don’t really have any idea what I’m doing…

What do you reckon?

Considering how many beginners there are visiting this forum, your journey should be of enough interest. And similarly to asking questions, it is not the UE4 expertise level that makes a good WIP thread, but the style of its content. I say go for it!
