A Light Nap
Description:
In the dead of night, a brave adventurer falls asleep under the moonlight during a stargazing paddle. While he was watching the stars… something else was watching him.
Hi there! I’m Tamara, an Unreal Engine Environment Artist and Generalist at CoPilot Co. in Winnipeg, Canada. I’ve been working in UE for 3.5 years, developing many different skillsets and proficiencies within UE and other 3D art tools. Recently, I’ve been passionate about developing more blueprints to help aid my look development workflow. I truly feel this project represents my growth in telling a story through environmental design and intentional lighting.
This entire scene was built from scratch, inspired by Moraine Lake, a famous picturesque mountain lake located in Canada as the primary reference.
What started as a beautiful, bright landscape with turquoise waters, quickly evolved into a dark moody scene that incorporates intentional lighting and a mysterious undertone to tie it all together. Some of the challenges faced on this project centred around showcasing the vast scale of the Moraine Lake environment and creating dynamic lighting that remains reactive throughout the short piece. These challenges were addressed by emulating perceived depth throughout each shot with the use of environmental assets placed in front of the virtual camera, a shallow f/stop, and motivated lighting. The reactive lighting challenge was solved in sequencer by key-framing the intensity of each light placed in the scene in relation to the dynamic spaceship lighting. This created an overall cinematic look for the entire project.
