A few questions

Alright! I wont talk for ages I just want to a few questions! Feel free to skip the part titled “About me” its just about what im doing at the moment!

About me:
Alright, well right now I am studying an achitect course at my college in Australia. I asked my teacher if I would be able to use Unreal Engine 4 to do my major project in and he doesnt believe the engine can produce good results! Soo I am here to show off what this amazing engine can really do!

Question 1)
How to a get a realistic glass effects, everyone links me to that popular youtube video, unless im missing the main point of that video I dont think it makes that good of quality glass. Im open to links but I think it may be more then just the texture.

Question 2) Realistic water…
Okay, I dont know where to begin. So all help is needed!

Question 3) technquies.
In making the house itself, What are common good technquies in going about that.

I am new to the architect side of the engine! Im used to working on games but I guess I cant hand in a game for my major project…

Thanks for your time! If anyone else has ‘nooby’ questions, feel free to add them in the replies.

Unfortunately for glass it’s gonna be impossible to get very realistic reflections/refractions…UE4 engine limit. You can do something okay-ish but you’ll never reach the quality a standard renderer will gives you (aka vray).

Under the learn tab you can download the water plane demo, otherwise check out the forums some people have made nice oceans and stuff like that. Some people even have download links to try their stuff. Also, Epic just added screen space reflections on translucent materials. Your coming at a good time

Good luck

Hi Ethan, I used UE4 for my final graduation project at UNSW and they were more than happy with it, ended up getting a HD as the final mark.

If you need to show them proof then you can show them my thread :stuck_out_tongue: https://forums.unrealengine.com/showthread.php?53705-Architectural-Visualisation-Graduation-Project-COMPLETE

Or just show them the Paris UE4 interior demo, that should convince them.

Translucent materials are UE4’s main weak point due to how it renders (deferred). Glass can be very tricky to make realistic, same goes for mirrors. Water isn’t too bad nowadays, there have been quite a few samples done by the community which you can hijack.

As for the house, do you have to design it yourself? Or do you have a requirement to find a ‘client’?
We had to have clients for our graduation project, which saves time since the architect just gave me the 3D model file. The model was already designed to Australian standards which was a bonus

We have to fully design our building and make it from skratch. We are aloud to use ‘unsperation’ but anything that is a direct copy will be failed instantly. I think its my teacher personally who doesnt believe in UE4. Thanks anyway! I am just finding it hard to learn these things and he is giving me a hard time because I am not doing what everyone else is

Your project looks great and is quite close to the standards I want to do mine at  your kitchen looks great! That would be my favourite!

Yeah your teacher sounds like a grump.

I had some initial trouble convincing my tutor’s to do UE4 too, and this was way back last May before all of the gorgeous Arch interior demo’s the community has made. Just have to be persistent and know what you want, then they’ll let you :). I remember showing the realistic rendering demo on my laptop to them and they got blown away, maybe you could show your teacher that demo too.

Thanks! I just need to learn more of the arch side of UE4.

Ill quote him now after I showed him what we have here on the forums and the paris apartment on youtube

“All of this isnt really impressive”

Okay, so I need to show the rest of the marking board what UE4 can Achieve

The only real advantage of UE4 for arch viz is the interactivity because it’s obviously not as impressive as photoreal offline renders. Knowing that like 95% of this industry use max+vray…I’m not surprised by his answer. Have you tried to have him navigate the scene in real-time? Maybe this could change his mind.

hopefully by sept 15, we’ll see some crazy stuff coming from the Ronen’s Vineward challenge. some big studios are participating. Here’s the forum for all entries.

As I get into here, having done my master thesis project in UE4, there are quite a few very interesting aspects to UE as part of an architectural process: namely it can be part of a form giving process, allows for more interactive/alternative discussion of arch & is also blazingly fast to experiment in.

If you really want go the extra mile, show them the interactivity you can do in UE4 - OR you could do what I did and integrate an Oculus Rift HMD to your grad project visualisation. But that opens up a whole other can of worms.

Hello! Thats a great idea and ill give it a go! Only problem is getting the Oculus Rift and setting it up in my project… As I would love to have 1 or 2 people to teach me some technquics when applying the Oculus Rift, I cant find anyone who would give me the time and work for free… They would be credited for everything they did its just the trouble of finding the right person with the right experience

It’s not terribly difficult to set-up, you just have to reduce the graphics when you plug the HMD in. You’ll also need a pretty beefy graphics card to run it properly too, I had to go out and get a GTX 980 :s

The upside though is that you’ll stand out in your grad project.

Yeah! The down side is I am not there to present it to my marking panel… So I dont know what specs they are running, i can know for sure they will set it up properly and I dont know where I can get an Oculus from. But I really do want to set up project up with this and would love a tutor willing to put in a small amount of time to make sure all goes well  Thanks again!
