A bit disappointed

I have purchased the 1 month Steam subscription just to test out the mesh capabilities.

With RC I was offered a difficult menu with several components.
In this example project, it was only one, but in my other projects, there were up to 5.
I don’t have any information about when several components are created and when not and why several components are created at all. Is this a bug or a feature?

I hit “Simplify Tool”, and I was asked to type my desired numbers of tris.
I typed 10.000.
Now I click the “simplify” button below this textbox.
Now what I see is this:

Confused of what this is, I hit the “Normal Detail” button, hoping I do the right thing.

What I get is this:

What am I supposed to do now? I think the manual is missing something here.

I click “Colorize” to view the newly created, decimated pointcloud / mesh (?).

It looks like this:

Now I click “Export” and choose FBX format.
Now I import the .fbx into Unity.
I’m stuck because the .fbx is 1,4 GB.

This can’t be right because I chose 10k tris.

Do you think the software engineers could pay more attention to what most of their users need and simplify their workflow?
This would be really nice, thank you.

I believe in RC, but I will wait 3-6 months before I subscribe to it again.

If I did anything wrong, please correct me.

Hi tw2016
I recommend you to look around as RC has many options as it is good to have control over the processes
You can find the 10k model under the COMPONENT

COMPONENT_MODEL.png

But if I calculate a 10tris model, and it doesn’t produce one, it’s big failure of the sofware.

Sorry, I don’t want to look around if not really ncessary.

“Looking around” should only be considered when he / she wants to tweak something to the maximum, but not for operations where you instruct the software to do a 10k tris model, and where it doesn’t do so.

Thank you.

Hi tw2016

Look again and your 10k tris model is there…

Ok, but I when click “Export”, this model isn’t exported, right?
Instead a 1,4 GB model is exported.

Hi Tw2016
You need to select which model you want to export. As RC is oriented more at the professionals and the workflows are adjusted to that. So yes, more “clicking” but it is for having full control of every step of the processing…
To check the 10k model, use the RENDER tool to have a look at it before export.

But when I created a 10k model, how could the software think that I want to export a 1.4 GB model instead?

Also, I don’t understand the results in the 3d view after clicking the “Simplify” button. I looks like I lost any details.
If we need to do anything to bring up the decimated model, please show a message or do it automatically.

Thanks for fixing this.

Hi tw2016
It is because after the SIMPLIFICATION you used the NORMAL mode reconstruction and after that the 3rd model was selected, then colorized and exported…

I did that because I got this:

Nobody told me how to go on afterwards, the tutorial is no help.
Tell me how to go on!

Hi tw2016
take a look at some tutorials here: https://www.capturingreality.com/Showcase
take a look at all the tutorials as they explain different workflows.

Yes, but if some users don’t understand it, it is time to change something.

Please just improve it. I don’t want to switch my software again, just listen to customers.
Thanks.

Please post a video of RC to Unity 3D game scenario with LODs, and I will be more than happy.

Right now the workflow contain ZBrush (for removing undesired part of the mesh), Retopogun (for retopology of the model) and Blender (for proper unwrappring) and Unity.
I know all of them, but this is just manual work which could be done easier by a computer.

All of this could be made easier with RC.

Thanks!

Again, I have tried to simplify a model.
What I get is this:

How should I go on from here?

Hello tw2016,
This is covered in the Using Components tutorial in the Help section of the software: ‘Component is a part of a model - a group of images aligned together. Sometimes you get more components after alignment. This may happen when your photo collection contains more than one disjoint object, object’s texture is weak, there are not enough images or the change in perspective is too high.’ So this is not a software bug…

It seems that you chose a too low number, the program did just what you asked for.

Now you left the simplification process and started a new reconstruction.

I asked the program to simplify to 10k tris.
As you can see, the model is completely gone.

Why do you think the program did exactely what it should do?

Try to render the simplified model, which is almost invisible in the 3D as a point cloud, to see the result.

Ok. When do you expect the new version of RC which shows meshes?
