5.4 stutters when disk is in use. This didn't happen in 5.3

There’s new issue (out of the multitude) with 5.4 that it makes my harddrive very slow. I’m not sure why it’s constantly using the hard drive but this issue did not exist in 5.3. Even the basic third person template stutters

It’s so bad that if I have something being copied in the background, then 5.4 starts to stutter even worse and if I load another Unreal project, it takes a VERY long time to load while 5.4 is running. However, everything speeds back up once I close 5.4

In the video, the “CityBLD” project is in 5.4 and the “Mission Creator V2” project is in 5.2.

  • I first showcase how 5.4 stutters at a fixed rate while the same level in 5.2 works completely smoothly.

  • Then I start a large copying task, (I mess up the copy command and restart the task)

  • Then I showcase how 5.4 has completely frozen and small stutters have started happening in 5.2

  • Then I showcase once I close 5.4, 5.2’s slight stutters are also gone.

Does this something to have with Zen Storage? I don’t know what it is but I want out.

Why can’t we have a smooth development experience like UE4. It seems every UE5 iteration is a new clustercuck of its own.

Any fixes for this?

Have you been able to solve this?

Hi, try the following

  • Upgrade to 5.4.3
  • Delete the Intermediate and DerivedDataCache folders.

Already am on 5.4.3. Tried clearing the folders to no avail.

Nopsies. I actually came back to berate 5.4 a bit more

I have this happening with me too. I got to move the game to an SSD to get anything done because it takes so long to stop pausing the whole engine I’d wait for hours after opening UE and get nothing done.
