Hi guys, im building a pc focus 100% to develop games on UnrealEngine 5.
And i have a question on GPU decission.
My build looks like:
CPU: 9 7900x( i was looking i7 14700k too, but the motherboards for 14th gen of intel are quiet expensive). there is a big difference between them?
Cpu Cooler: Phantom Spirit 120se
MotherBoard: B650 gigabyte gaminx x/ asustuf. I dont know yet
RAM: 64gb ddr5 5200mhz
SSD: Mvme 1TB or 2TB depends the budget
AC: Corsair or msi 850 w gold. i dont know yet
GPU: 4060tu 16gb(515€) / 4070 12 gb(640€).
Which gpu i should buy, there are some factors in the decision.
First: the difrence of vram, ive been seen that for unreal is important to have more VRam. favor to 4060
Second: Obviously the 4070 has a better performance, diferent chip… but for the difference on price(+130€) is worth it buy the 4070 agains 4060ti 16gb?
Between those two, it’s a no-brainer, the 16gb card.
Yes, technically, the 4070 is better, but not 130 better, and 12gb VRAM is low.
In fact, 24gb would be better.
But, you have to remember, that according to Steam hardware polls, in the middle of 2023, the most common GPU was still a GTX 1650 ( ! )
One of the problems of developing on a high-end rig, is you have no idea how things will go on a more typical setup. There’s nothing better than things already running slowly for you, to get you to look at optimization early on
The refreshed 40xx SUPER lineup will be popping up over this month (announced 2 days ago?). Technically, this should push the prices down seeing how Nvidia envisioned the new MSRPs. The 4070ti Super actually gets 16GB now:
If you can wait a couple of weeks and work it into your budget, that’d be the best choice.
7900x
Such a strange product, it looks good on paper but gets overshadowed left, right and centre. Do consider the 7800X3d. It may be “gaming oriented” but some apps love the special cache.
i7 14700k
Do note these DO work with DDR4 - and older boards are much cheaper (30% or so). However, it’s hard to advocate going DDR4 today even though the DDR5 performance gains are somewhat marginal at the moment. But, historically speaking, memory bandwidth requirements do escalate as years go by.
