I cannot change editor language now,everytime I click on Language&Region setting,the editor crashes…
Hi ,
Unfortunately, I’m not able to see the same behavior on my machine. Maybe I’m missing a step or doing something differently.
Here is what I’ve tried:
- Go to Edit > Editor Preferences > Region & Language.
- Change the Editor Localization Language (anything other than English)
- Set as Default
- close and restart the project.
- Go back to the Region & Languages tab
- Set back to English or another language.
I’ve tried this with all the languages, and currently do not see a crash on my end. Am I missing something or is this what you’re doing as well?
If you’re using the same steps, is this true of all projects, even blank ones that you create, or is it just your current project that is doing this?
Also, if you could tell me which language you’re switching to along with what OS you’re using. Currently I’m on Windows 8.1, but we do have access to Windows 7 and 10 as well, along with Mac and Linux to see if this is happening on these as well.
Let me know.
Tim
I’m using win10 simplified Chinese version,so default is simplified chinese,I want to change it back to English, the crash happens on all projects…Thanks!
Thanks for getting back to me so quickly!
Actually our Win10 machine isn’t up and running just yet. I don’t have an ETA of when that will be, but I’ve just tested this on Win7 as well with no issue.
As a test, if you use the “reset to defaults” button in the top right of the Editor Preferences this should reset it back for you, but this could also be a workaround for the crash until I can test on a Win 10 machine to see if it’s specific to that as well.
If resetting doesn’t work can you try to use the option in the Launcher and “Verify” your engine version by going to the Library Tab and selecting your engine version. There will be a drop down so that you can do this.
Thanks!
Tim
I have reset to defaults and verified but with no use,I find that the 4.8.3 does not have this issue on my win10,only 4.9 has…
Thanks for letting me know. We’ve got a couple of people that use Win10 in our QA department that are going to test this for me and let me know.
I’ll update you once I know more. Thanks!
We tested this on 4.9 yesterday on our Win10 machine, but we weren’t getting any sort of crash. We tried adjusting different settings in this and reloading the project to set back to english and still not seeing the crash.
Have you tried, verifying or reinstalling the engine yet to see if this would resolve the issue.
Also, what are the specs on your machine? Not sure if this has any bearing on it, but it may be helpful. Although, since we don’t have wide access to Win10 yet for a lot of testing purposes it may be more difficult for us to try and reproduce locally on our different hardware setups.
I’ve tried verifying but with no use.
My computer specs:win10(Home Basic),Intel Core i7 4720HQ,16G RAM,Nvidia GTX980M(4g)
By the way.is there a way to change language through the engine config file? Thanks
This should be located in one of the engine config files or the project config files. I had a quick look today, but couldn’t locate it although it should be in one of these folder files. I’ll continue to see if I can locate it.
Also, I’ve still not managed to get a crash out of this. I know the 4.9 Preview 4 released today. I’m not sure if this would likely resolve the issue, but if you’ve grabbed that version, are you still seeing the same crash?
I’ll let you know what I find with the config files once I dig into them a little more.
I’ve looked through all the ini files and I’m having trouble locating where this is actually being set. I do have a workaround for setting it as another language that may help.
- Open your Editor settings > Region and Languages
- Click Export and save the Region and Languages settings as they are.
- Navigate to that file and open the txt file. You will see a line that says “Culture=” and beside it will be the language selection. Change this to en
Should look like this in the file now:
- Now save this file, and go back to your Editor Settings and select Import. This will import this files settings and ask you to restart the editor.
Hopefully this should get everything back to square one. This should also work by removing and reinstalling the engine completely as well. I’ve still not been able to get the same crash unfortunately.
Let me know if this method works for you as well.
Thanks!
Tim
Thank you very much for spending time helping me find the file, unfortunately,I cannot click the Regions and Languages in the editor settings, once I click on it,the editor crashes immediately,so I cannot even export the setting…
In 4.8 I could actually take just a text file with the information above named “Regions & Language.ini” placed in the project file under Saved > Config > Windows and it would change the language.
4.9 appears to have changed a few things and I can no longer do this.
If all goes well the 4.9 final release should be out this week. In the previous comments you mentioned that you had verified the version, but not if you had removed completely and reinstalled.
Once 4.9 final releases can you try uninstalling and reinstalling that version of the engine.
Now I have uninstalled the engine and reinstalled the 4.9 release, but sadly,it still crashes immediately I click on the languages & regions…
I don’t see it linked above, but can you post a copy of your DxDiag. Eric and I have noticed more crashes with Win10 stuff. This has seemed related to some drivers not being updated, not just the GPU drivers.
Unfortunately, we’re still extremely limited on being able to test with Win10, but we’re pushing to get more machines to test with! It’s just a slow process unfortunately.
Thank you so much for your patience while we’re trying to work through this. If this is blocking you from developing at the moment it may be worthwhile to go back to Win 7 or 8 until we get some more finalized things in. I really hate that we can’t reproduce this right now.
Also, if you have DX12 enabled via the command line argument it may be best to disable this and see if that helps. Since this has been very experimental there have been a lot of crashes reported with it.
Thank you very much for helping me all the way!Could you please take a look at this 2 issues coming with me:About modulated shadow on ios - Mobile - Epic Developer Community Forums

Any information available?I do not run in DX12,and I come across a bug that once I hit escape in es2 editor preview
I’ve assigned the other two issues you’ve linked to some of the guys on our team to look at. They’ll respond when they can.
As for the Win 10 issue it looks like you’re driver for the Intel Integrated Graphics is out of date. It’s at driver version 10.18.0015.4248. The latest version is Version is 15.40.4.64.4256
It may appear that all drivers are up to date, but this one is not and we’ve seen a number of users lately who have the version 10 driver causing issues.
Try upgrading this version which is the latest from Intel: Download Intel Drivers and Software
It may not be possible due to Laptop manufacturers that lock down these drivers to not be updated, which means there may be one available from their site instead.
Thanks very much! But I tried that and it was not compitable with my driver.I 'll wait for the dell to update the driver…
We’re still continuing to investigate things on our end, especially with the surge or Intel Integrated drivers using version 10 that we’ve seen lately. I don’t have an eta at the moment, but feel free to check in a few weeks to see if any progress has been made with that or on the Win 10 testing front as well.
Sorry we don’t have a specifically clear answer on this right now.
I have the same issue that crashed while clicking on the language & region, also Chinese language set as default, I’m running the engine on win 7 BTW.
If the issue cannot be solved right now, is there any way that i can re-install the engine in English as default so I can avoid clicking language & region?
thanks!
