[4.25] Packaging fails with "UnknownCookFailure" (worked fine in 4.18-4.24). Log files unhelpful

I am having problems packaging a Blueprint project in 4.25 (works fine in 4.18 - 4.24). Nativization Disabled.
Error code or anything else in the logs isn’t helping me find what could have changed in 4.25 or why packaging fails now.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

After some painful hours of searching a needle in a haystack, I think I finally found the issue.
It essentially comes down to 4.25 not coping well with any type of circular reference between two Blueprint assets (in my case an Actor Class and a Function Library) which were perfectly fine before, even with nativization enabled.

It would have been much easier if the cooker at least indicated the object it had problems with…

I’ve recently tried out 4.25 and also received this bug, is there any more details you can give on how you were able to solve it? Thanks in advance.

I’ve been unsuccessful in reproducing the issue in a new project, however, for me, it was solved by removing any reciprocal hard references between actors.
If I understand it correctly, the error indicates that some object hasn’t been processed yet while it’s linked by another.
In my case the problematic setup would look like that:

ActorA has ComponentB
ComponentB uses functions in FunctionLibraryC
FunctionLibraryC references ActorA

Same if ComponentB has any direct reference to ActorA (e.g. cast or variable of that type).

I usually try to avoid hard references, but it’s not always feasible and none of that was a problem with Blueprints in earlier engine versions, not even with nativization.
It’s frustrating that everything compiles in editor but then fails during packaging.
It’s even more frustrating that the log can’t identify the objects in question to give any hint.

I’ve also had some “shadow” references to deal with. Meaning, in Reference Viewer an actor would show a dependency to another actor, while there shouldn’t be any.
Searching for the other actor in the first one pointed to a ‘default value’ of a “GetClassDefaults” node (which had nothing to do with the actor type in question).
Deleting the node and placing it again removed that reference.

Some Widgets also showed similar references that weren’t there.
I had to make a copy of those and delete the originals with the “replace” option.

Weird stuff like that. Without proper debugging tools, you start to hate Blueprints.
I wish we at least had a tool that would find references to specific objects within a Blueprint (e.g. you want to find anything related to ActorA in ActorB - functions from a library, any variables of that type (including local ones and inputs/outputs), default values). Good luck with that. or maybe there is, but I somehow missed it so far.

Best approach usually is not to touch any engine release before the 2nd hotfix.
4.25.0 is still very much an early version and hopefully will get more mature with the next updates.

I duplicated my project, deleted everything inside the content folder, migrated and deleted blueprints until I stopped getting the packaging errors. Attempted to pinpoint the problem ( if your BP is referenced in another BP when trying to delete it, you can click on that BP in the window and delete it as well. FYI to anyone ) . This process didn’t work effectively. I need to work on my programming fundamentals to say the least.

My project doesn’t have a lot of dependencies, so I went through any BP-related marketplace assets my project is using, for my case, the heaviest one was the Pro Main Menu V2 kit, which hasn’t been updated to 4.25 as of now, it wasn’t a problem with engine updates in the past (for me).

Interesting. That’s actually something I was considering as well, as I’m using this approach, too - but neither was I able to reproduce it in a new project nor was it ultimately necessary to change in my case - i.e. I’m still utilizing delegates in functions and am able to cook in 4.25 now.
Might be a combination of factors.
