[4.12.5/4.13] Crash in FD3D11Viewport::PresentChecked during startup from both Launcher and from source build

This is new, just started happening. I’m not sure what changed in my system to cause it. NVidia Driver version is 372.54.

Edit:4.13 is also crashing when run from the launcher. I’m going to update my source and see if the same happens.

Hello jCoder,

From the only other report I can find, it seems like the fix was to update video drivers. You can find that post here: Crash when unreal engine development over RDP - Platform & Builds - Epic Developer Community Forums

Can you give that a try while I look into what may be causing this issue? If you’re already at the latest, try reverting to the last known working driver.

Just updated to 372,70 and 4.13 is still crashing (sent a crash report in). Same with 4.12.5 (no crash report sent)

Installed NVidia driver version 368.81 (two versions back) and the project browsers now launches with 4.13. It appears something changed in 372.54 broke that something on my setup.

What graphics card are you using? I want to see if I can get the same thing to reproduce locally.

Edit: Also, what operating system are you on?

Windows 8.1 MSI GT70 2PC Laptop with NVidia 870M GPU.

4.13 Source build works with old driver as well.

Well I wasn’t able to reproduce the issue with the same setup on the drivers mentioned unfortunately (or fortunately depending on the way you look at it). Do you happen to have any other software running that has to do with your graphics card such as something that regulates the fan speed? If so, can you try temporarily disabling that?

Also, when this crash occurred, was it when opening the editor itself (opening to the Project Browser) or when opening a project? If it was when opening a project, was this occurring with blank projects or only a certain existing one?

Reinstalled the latest drivers and now everything works. As least running from the Launcher. I’ll check the source in a minute

To get it to fail there are two alternatives:

  1. Launch the Epic Games Browser
  2. Click on the Launch button for 4.12.5 or 4.13
  3. It would crash while launching the Unreal Project Browser

The other alternative was using the source from Github:

  1. Compile in DebugGame Editor
  2. Run the UE4 project
  3. It would crash while launching the project browser.

Running from the Visual Studio source project works fines as well, now. I hate it when things magically break, then start working again

The only thing that changed was I installed a screenshot utility called Greenshot. However I uninstalled it when I had the problem and continued to have the problem. Rebooted the system as well.

I’m glad to hear the issue isn’t occurring anymore at least although it is disappointing that we couldn’t find a cause. It couldn’t been something that went wrong during the driver installation.

I’ll be leaving your comment as the answer for now. If you run into this issue again, please be sure to leave a comment and the question will reopen.
