3ds max Vray export to Unreal Engine 5 materials

So what is best way to export to UE5. I used in past FBX file to export from 3ds max and import in Unreal and material to work in UE. Now I used Datasmith and it convert whole scene and inport in Unreal great, but materials that Vray use are maps that are on surfaces with uvw modifier, while in UE you do all things in 1-1 UV space so if something is outside UV it make big material node tree. Is there a better way to do this? I saw some plugin but didn’t try it and in description it said UE4 and 2021 max so I am not sure is it capable to do newer versions. It unwrap all models inside max and send to UE so you just have one node for each parameter like Difuse and just node with map, Specular and so on…
Or to do everything manually workflow? Substance painter? Quixel? I need some directions on this what is best workflow from max to UE5 and what you use. Model is not big deal how materials are.
Thanx in advance

Hello there!

Datasmith works well for importing entire scenes directly into Unreal. However, as you mentioned, it struggles with converting complex V-Ray materials to Unreal’s PBR material system, especially when using UVs outside the 1:1 space.
So if you are working with Datasmith you will probably need to cleanup the entire material network, which can be time-consuming.

You can use V-ray to Unreal Plugin that can help you bridge V-ray scenes from 3ds max into Unreal.
This will help you keep your V-ray materials intact and work in Unreal.
Downside of this is that it can be limited in terms of interaction with the unreal ecosystem, and may not be performant.

Here are some tutorials by Chaos on importing V-ray scenes to unreal, hope it helps!

Thanks I already watch this and its really narrow info, no deep explain. Anyway I need performance in UE that is why I send everything there. I have beautiful rendered assets in 3ds max vray. I guess only workflow is to clean model from materials, send to UE and then make new materials. New material create by watching vray material by sense?

Hi @Kratos_again!
I understand it can frustrating sometimes, but If you don’t have a huge complex scene I would recommend to export the models and make the materials from scratch, since it’s gonna be less time consuming than editing what you get from datasmith.
Thank you for your patiance and good luck with your project!
