3D viewer performance

Some feedback regarding the 3D viewer, my main point is that it’s way faster on Sketchfab and rarely crashes. That’s unfortunately not my experience on FAB, it’s slower and sometimes freezes up totally or just simply won’t load. The FAB viewer is also slower to load in comparison, several seconds slower.

To my eyes the models also looks sharper on Sketchfab, this is specially noted when you inspect the models textures there can be a big difference as shown on the attached FAB/ Sketchfab images.

What i do now to go around this problem is that when i upload a model to FAB, i also upload it to Sketchfab so i can share and demonstrate the model with the 3D viewer on Sketchfab.

Thanks for the feedback, I don’t reproduce at all those results, seems you have a hardware/browser problem on your side, could you share a screenshot of WebGL Report ?

Been trying some different devices and browsers here, iOS, iPadOS, MacOS, with Safari and Firefox. Runs perfect of Sketchfab but not FAB.

Just tested on a Win 11 device also, it looks better and not as blurry, but it’s not as good as on Sketchfab, specially the performance. This is also what I’m hearing from others, creators and buyers.

By Performance you mean “Load Time Performance” or “Frame Per Second performance” ?
( Load time are being worked on due to the much bigger size of FAB user base, so we can somehow
have higher latency. )

What is the exact apple hardware you tested on so that we can try to reproduce and investigate more ?

(Our tests on apple M1, iOS, win11, win10, nvidia, intel didn’t show lower Frame per second performance here)

(thanks a lot for the followup, so we can dig and try to fix the problems)

Im scratching my head

Devices dested

  • HP (i think i9) Zbook with Nvidia GPU (Textures looks good, but lower FPS)
  • MBP M2 (Best performance, no bad textures but lower FPS)
  • MBP 16" Intel i7 2020+ eGPU RX6800 (Bad textures and lower FPS)
  • iPad Air 2022 (Hard to notice performance difference)
  • iPhone 11 and 14 (no bad textures, Hard to notice performance difference)
  • All tested devices loads faster on Sketchfab

I am surprised by the M2Pro that don’t have any issues with bad textures, with that i mean blurry and tessellated (as my pictures shows). If i am making a qualified guess, the M2 runs 60FPS on Sketchfab and approx 20-30 in FAB, going full screen the performance obviously drops but in Sketchfab still “smooth”. Regarding performance- that’s what i experience, i have not measured actual frames Digital Foundry style

The bad textures/ image quality seems to be so far local on the MBP 16" Intel device… if its just local that’s good, and if you’re already working on the load times that’s super.

  • “Bad textures” is when FPS is bad, you get lower Texture/render quality to ease the graphic card bandwith, so only happens when FPS < 30 fps

  • on MBP 16" Intel i7 2020+ eGPU RX6800 do you use the laptop screen or external screen ? (to reproduce using same fullscreen pixel resolution)

If you’re willing to check FPS,
chrome developper tools has a nice integrated tool:

it should overlay a FPS counter over the viewer, even fullscreen

If FPS are good, it might be we have a controller problem (mouse, touchpad), if not, that would be very interesting.

Thank you for the reply and your support.

Regarding your question on the eGPU- i always use an external 4k display with the eGPU and also the built in 16" display. The performance is better on the eGPU accelerated 4k display AND the textures and image quality looks normal. But the FPS still seems lower on FAB, but that’s something i personally can live with, the important thing is the image quality and that seems fine on the external display.

I will test the Chrome developer tool, will have to install Chrome first and figure things out, i don’t normally use Chrome.

I have done my homework sir ! the performance i experience with Chrome is much worse (on FAB and in general) (FPS and Load times)

3D viewer on idle -60FPS, 3D viewer in action- 40-45FPS. 3D viewer in full screen with Chrome- very bad 4-7FPS.

Best experienced performance is on Safari, then Firefox and Edge.

Thanks a lot, really helps, we will investigate further to find why.
4fps is bad indeed
Those are with the Apple Intel ?
On Sketchfab you get solid 60fps in both case ? (in webpage and fullscreen)

Yes its with the Intel Mac and eGPU on external display.

On Sketchfab it’s rock solid 60FPS- webpage and full screen!

Thanks again for the solid report, we’ll get to the bottom of it.
