I imported a 3d model of an ogre fully rigged. The issue is When i retarget the animations from the UE5 manny to my ogre, it shrinks my ogre to an antman size. i watched a bunch of videos, but i can’t seem to get a fix here. I successfully did this with a goblin model that was pretty small compared to the manny, but the ogre is giving me problems. It is probably 1/4 bigger than the manny, maybe less.
I’m at a loss here, and i’m hoping somehow has the answer. Thanks.
If the Ogre is only ~25% larger than the Manny, it shouldn’t be shrinking to Ant-Man size just because of retargeting. I’d check the retarget setup rather than scaling the mesh manually.
A few things I would check:
-
Check the Ogre’s actual Skeletal Mesh scale first. Open the Ogre Skeletal Mesh and make sure its imported/component scale is normal. If the mesh was imported with an unusual scale, fix that before working on the retarget.
-
Check the target IK Rig. Make sure the Ogre’s IK Rig is using the correct root/pelvis and that the major chains (spine, arms and legs) are mapped correctly. Unreal’s IK Retargeter uses the source and target IK Rigs to transfer animation between characters with different proportions.
-
Check the retarget/base pose. Put the Manny and Ogre into comparable A/T poses. If the target pose is badly misaligned, the retarget can produce very strange results. Unreal specifically provides retarget poses and Auto Align tools for this situation.
-
Look at the IK Retargeter → Asset Settings → Target Mesh Scale. This is mainly a preview scale adjustment, so don’t use it as a permanent fix for a bad import. Epic notes that it is intended to make characters of very different sizes easier to align in the retargeter.
-
Check the pelvis/root settings. If the Ogre is collapsing or becoming tiny when the animation plays, inspect the root/pelvis translation and scaling. Pelvis Motion is responsible for transferring the pelvis position while accounting for differences in character proportions.
A good quick test would be to open the IK Retargeter, select the Ogre as the Target Preview Mesh, and compare the Ogre and Manny before pressing Play. If the Ogre is already tiny there, the issue is most likely the target mesh/import scale or IK Rig setup. If it only becomes tiny when the animation runs, I’d focus on the retarget/root/pelvis settings.
Also, since your goblin retargeted correctly, I’d compare the Ogre’s IK Rig and retarget settings against the working goblin setup. That should help identify the difference pretty quickly.
If you can post a screenshot of the IK Retargeter showing the Manny + Ogre, plus the Ogre’s IK Rig/chain mapping, it would be much easier to pinpoint the exact setting causing it.
