Editor crashing on Launch

Just finished downloading and installing the editor, but when I try to run it, I get a crash report popup.

Already tried: CrashReportClent has stopped working - Getting Started & Setup - Epic Developer Community Forums and it didn’t work.

My specs are:Intel i7-2600k 3.4Ghz, 8GB DDR3 RAM, Windows 7 64-bit installed on a 130GB SSD (Unreal is on a secondary 2TB SATA Hard Drive) and an ATI 6970HD

Update: I checked my fonts directory and the fonts that it requested are missing.

I searched online and downloaded Robot-Black.ttf and DroidSansMon.ttf, put them in the font directory, now my stack is above (Below the original)

You said that you had tried what was in the link, what all is not working specifically? Have you tried the hotfix and it is not working?

It looks like some assets did not properly download. Have you tried uninstalling/reinstalling?

There were a few hotfixes posted which I tried. I just did a full reinstall and looks like I’m getting a similar stack trace to the original (I’ll update the first post).

Can you confirm that your Unreal Engine version is 4.0.2 (seen above the Launch button)?

If so, then please do not use the Quick-Fixes mentioned in the other post, they were only intended for a previous version of the engine, and have already been rolled into 4.0.2.

I am running 4.0.2 I just uninstalled SP1 as I saw mentioned on another thread and re-installed. Going to do a full install of Unreal again, but it seems when I uninstall, it just uninstalls the launcher - not the data files. Should I just delete the directory?

I uninstalled the launcher, deleted the whole directory and re-installed. Same error as above (missing files), I’m gonna cancel my payment until this gets fixed - don’t really want to pay for something I can’t use.

Are you installing the Github version of the editor (with source code) or the binary version off of unrealengine.com? Thank you!

Is this the only log available in the ProjectName\Saved\Logs folder? It looks to only be the log for the Crash Reporter, but there should be other logging information from earlier than this when the game crashed and then subsequently launched the crash reporter.

I’m not sure where it would be - the editor is never even loading. I get the Unreal 4 splash screen for about 5 seconds, then the crash dialogue.

It would be in a text file in C:\Users*YourUsername*\Documents\Unreal Projects*ProjectName*\Saved\Logs\

If you hit the open button for the content examples project in the launcher, it will create the Saved folder in Content Examples and start writing a log file in there:

I just checked, I have only one project ‘Content Examples’ and there’s no Saved folder within.

For the MeshUtilities one, “because the file couldn’t be loaded by the OS” often means that the file doesn’t exist on the hard drive, or it could be having problems reading it from your hard drive. Can you locate this file in windows explorer?

For the other issues that say “but it was incompatible with the current engine version (4 0 0 0). This is likely a stale module that must be recompiled.”, usually this is a module compiled for an earlier version of the engine, and just needs to be recompiled, but since you’re not compiling from source, I’m not sure why you’re getting that error.

I found the above DLL, though it’s in D:\Unreal Engine\4.0\Engine\Binaries\Win64 as I’ve got Unreal installed on my programs drive.

Just for reference, I also tried installing UE4 to the C: drive and had the same issues, so I re-installed to D (my C is an SSD and doesn’t have a ton of room)

EDIT: For fun, I deleted the dll and ran verify install - the dll was downloaded again, but it’s still crashing.

Looking at the MeshUtilities dll a bit more, in the code (MeshUtilities.Build.cs) it appears to rely on DX9. If you run something like DependencyWalker on it, it looks like it relies on D3DX9_43.dll. The UE4 installer should make sure the DirectX11 redistributable for you, and that should include DirectX9, but apparently not the D3DX9 stuff.

I would check if you have that .dll on your system. On my Win7 machine, it’s in this location:

C:\Windows\System32\D3DX9_43.dll

If this dependency is the problem, Installing DirectX runtime yourself should fix it. We are using the June 2010 version, located after that link.

After you run that, check again to see if D3DX9_43.dll exists at the location above. If it does, then try running the Editor again, and see if the log output is different.
