Why is the material preview black?

When you paint with it on the landscape it should work, it’s just the landscape layer part that doesn’t know which layer to preview.

Why is my thumbnail preview in the Material Editor not displaying my resulted material? I can open other (existing) materials, and their preview displays fine. But ones that I make aren' t!
