Why I think Lightmass is completely out of Date

I don’t think that’s a limitation for adding support for other renderers, it doesn’t have to be so tightly integrated into the engine since it’s just rendering the lighting rather than an actual in-game renderer.

There’s more to it than just lightmaps. There are light probes, cubemaps and other miscellaneous data.
