Why do player builds get embedded in the ground?

We have made some landscape in a game and when we play and build on it, the first layer of build ends up below the terrain. Why would that happen? We’re walking on it just fine and the players aren’t up to their waist in terrain.

This actually happens in the full game itself too. Its because if you place a wall “above the ground”, it needs to add the extra piece halfway into the ground so its connected

all of the builds in Fortnite are snapped to a grid. The dont just automatically sit on ground level, because the ground level may not be on a grid line. hope that makes sense
